Loon, did you have any other symptoms that now you look back on could have pointed the way to the failure?
Have they said what the cause was? e.g. Rod bearings etc...
I'm on my second e92 M3 the current one was bought from new, the first one was an ex demo with 1400 miles on it that one used quite a bit of oil but the one I've run in doesn't.

No Idrive messages at all. I even did a full Idrive check when I got home and it said everything was OK.
I did have the car in a couple of times as it seemed to bog when I put my foot down. It was a momentary thing but it got a lot worse then went pop.
No idea what went wrong and it won't mean anything to me even if they told me.

New engine in and car returned today. Apparently the engine would retail at £14,000 + VAT. Glad I'm not paying.
Thoughts on what to do now. I need to get the engine number changed in the V5 and wondering if that gets logged anywhere?
Road testing an M4 on Saturday, had a sit in one tonight and it feels very different to the M3, it feels a bit 4 series rather than M car, but let's see how it does on the test drive.

my 2008 e90 has just done 67k miles and the bmw extended warranty expires tomorrow - quote for comprehensive cover comes out at £1647 for 12 months - seems steepish but always been an advocate of the warranty - and probably will pull the trigger - use the car as my daily and a £14k + VAT engine bill would be depressing! will be interested in your comments on m4 compared to your e92...

yeah - my old porsche seems to appreciate and admittedly due to limited use costs very little to run - whilst the m3 depreciates and costs quite a lot - but of course the cars' usage and functions are chalk and cheesequote was with a £250 excess - I phoned them up and they said that as soon as the car hits 60k miles - price jumps - think it was £1200 last year - am going to sleep on it - OP's tale is worrying but am considering running the gauntlet and giving it a miss - as with the excess - i need a £1900 bill to be paid by warranty cover to break even and running costs with tyre and brakes mean that i spend probably £1500-£2000 at the dealers every year anyway

Can you get a quote for drivetrain only or something like that? It will be cheaper and will cover the engine if it blows...FazerBoy said:

problem is - driveline quote is £946 with £250 excess and limited to £5000 cover (that's not going to cover a blown S65!) and named component is £1359 with £250 excess - so something tells me they either don't want the business because their warranty claims with vehicles of this mileage substantiate the higher premiums or thats the going rate. think i will ponder it over a few beers!Update as requested by one poster on here:
The car is in tomorrow for it's running in service, so I can finally let loose with the new engine. I'm expecting good things.
There have been a few niggles, not least a regular warning saying "increased battery discharge". Multiple visits to the dealer and multiple attempted solutions, none of which worked. A new battery was fitted again under warranty, which has now fixed it.
Final piece is that whilst the dealer, Williams, have been good, BMW have been a bit disappointing in my opinion.
Firstly, they expected me to pay for the running in service at £470. That was made even more unpalatable having spent £700 on a service and some bits n bobs less than a month before the engine blew. They have relented, but only because I complained. BMW weren't listening to the same argument from Williams.
Secondly, the extended warranty is a bit of a weird one. The new engine effectively comes with a warranty that expires in a few weeks once the car hits 3 years of age. That's quite scary when you consider the cost, so they have offered me a 50% discount on the extended warranty, but again it took me to complain rather than it being offered up front.
I have to admit to having checked out the C63 AMG and the new Jag and have decided that BMW won't be getting any more of my money on bikes or cars. That should be a disappointment to them, as I've probably done at least £250k in the past decade on cars alone and another £50k on bikes in the past 3 years, let alone the servicing etc. It probably won't be though and my disappearance to a competitor won't even be noticed.

Unfortunately, when a part is replaced under warranty, a parts warranty is not provided, we would however, always recommend that you purchase an Insured Warranty policy. In light of your experience, I would be willing to offer 50% towards a BMW Warranty policy of your choice

Of course it won't be noticed. No difference to the millions swapping insurers every year to avoid being ripped off one way or another. Who cares? Really?

As a guide when I replace a product under warranty it does come with another 12 months but generally that will be the whole product not a part.
I would challenge that if you're going to keep it, however I understand why you want to walk away from the brand.
