Neil Young - Cortez the killer. I'm amazed by the expression & emotion in his playing and the passion in his voice considering he was 64 years old when this was recorded in 2009; even more so because he must have performed CTK countless times previously.
Cortez the Killer is very, very good but has been ruined by too many covers. Down by the River is better IMO and is the definitive Young guitar sound. http://youtu.be/yJyFh9CeriE

Depends on mood, but for some reason, tonight I am really, really feeling the doom metal vibe, to the point it's almost meditative.

Not for everyone, but that's hitting me like a tonne of bricks at the moment.

Roger Waters - The tide is turning

Great song, but this version especially because of where and when it was performed.

Could list hundreds but a few off the top of my head:

Dry the River - Weights and Measures (specifically from 1:20 to 2:05)

Dry the River - No Rest

Pearl Jam - Come Back (Live at Arena di Verona)

Pearl Jam - Porch (unplugged)

Foo Fighters - Walk - (specifically from 3:17 to 4:20 - ace in the gym)

Pink Floyd - Breathe - always reminds me of floating on a lilo

Zooey Deschanel - Tonight you belong to me ('cos I want her to sing it to me smile )

Here's a weird one. Polish singer called Czesław Niemen. Even though I don't really understand the words, it has an effect on me, which is a reflection on the power of music I think. It's a stunning song. Czesław Niemen - Dziwny jest ten świat

Not a song as such but definitely makes the hairs stand up

...and not forgetting our very own

It crossed my mind. This song is the highlight from Tilt, without a doubt.

I have only heard this version of my "hair standing on end" song once, that was live in concert about 10 years ago.

My daughter was just starting to play the Trumpet (now grade 7), and she was learning via Sefton Schools Music Service. So the first concert she played at included all the different bands and orchestra's in one night, and the "strings" did a version of Model by Kraftwerk. To be honest hearing 40 kids aged 7 to 18, playing better than the original really made my hair stand on end. Unfortunately not available on CD, and most of those kids are probably well into adulthood now.

As much as I love the original version, check out the version by Scandanavian guitarist Jose Gonzalez on spotify or something - it's stunning! I was hoping to put a link on here from a youtube clip, but the studio version isn't on there for some reason. Worth hunting out though. smile

Newton Faulkner recorded an amazing version of Teardrop - in a lift. Playing all 4 parts (vocal, percussion, left hand strings, right hand strings). Sometimes I think I'd like to take up guitar playing, then I see playing like that and know that I could never even attempt it.

It is amazing how artists who are perhaps total tossers, or have a pink and fluffy image can make stunning music which really provokes strong emotions. Morrissey is one, but Elton John is another. Song for Guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXgfAXy6Qws

New Order - Elegia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LY3ftiLqmE

Duran Duran - Ordinary World (acoustic): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTtusl2ShY4

I remember first hearing Abba's Visitors as a kid and hearing the emotions come through. I sometimes wonder if younger people (hark at the old giffer here) who haven't lived through the cold war understand the meaning of some of the 70s/80s music.

The one guaranteed to make the room dusty is REM's Everybody Hurts, but that doesn't get the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up.

Pink Floyd - When The Tigers Broke Free - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKfwwlEcowk - This video is a bit poignant too...maybe its the motes of dust floating around in my office?

A lot of Roger Waters' stuff makes my hairs stand on end. He just has a way with sounds and lyrics.

A few more Floyd while Im here:

Cluster One - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRqrpfzpTaA - So relaxing, not a hard note in the entire song. Flows wonderfully

Echoes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KMpZaEF6g0 - I love the lyrics in this song, first verse sends the shiver away down my spine.
