On the VW split-screen camper, when they decided on a three-phase charging system so he could charge it quicker when he goes to see his relatives, does that mean that he can't charge it at home (or at his relatives house) unless they get three-phase electricity installed? I was listening out for him saying how it could charge from either single phase or three-phase for convenience, but I don't think he did. Or is this a different three-phase to the electricity supplies in industrial units?

I’m pretty sure that you can just use a single phase hookup on it. The plug is the same, but two pins aren’t connected. Only one AC-DC converter runs in that case, and it charges the batteries from there.

This is a real game changer for owners of all this old tat. At some stage the engine and gearbox would be past any help.
I can see a world with e powered crumbling wrecks whizzing round one minor crash away from death or serious injury for the operator.

Ian Seabrook of Hubnut YouTube fame, has a couple of videos on his channel from a visit to the workshop.

A Tesla motor in a bubble car, surely a motorbike derived motor would be more appropriate?
This will be an interesting one.

Surely not - 40bhp? The packaging looked neat - not sure how long the little gearbox will last with that torque through it but may be okay.

I have a horrible feeling the engineering workshop in the old Criggion radio station (where the adaptor plate was made) got badly flooded last week - that lovely kit may have suffered so I hope they can rebuild.

It originally had a 4 cylinder 300cc BMW motor cycle engine according to the voice-over.confused

Definitely said ‘1 cylinder’ early on, I never heard anyone say it was a 4.

In the intro with period footage the voice-over said one cylinder, but when the two mechanics are jacking it up in the workshop the voice-over definitely said "The original 4 cylinder petrol engine".

We'll call that a score draw. smile

laugh

We didn’t see brake upgrades, did we? And they’re not easy to do on that I’d guess. Not sure what they had originally - leading/trailing shoe drums?

This episode hit new lows for me.
Who knew there could be so much drama and jeopardy from a simple gasket.
All that drama too, about heating the splined adapter for an interference fit and it looked loose as a wizards sleeve, the way it just dropped on, before even he got the wood block near to needlessly hit home with. Seeing how that spline was made though, was interesting.
I notice they also binned off the seat belts they received it with.
Then the commissioning couple gushing in wonderment at the joys of electric driving, after seeing their i3 parked on the drive. There is a lot of scripting, or at least the producers pushing for what lines are to be said, as far as I can judge. You see it in the workshop all the time.

You'd have to have quite an attachment to a bubble car to be happy to spend £30k-£40k on electrifying it.
Did Moggy say the handling was "amazing" in this week's episode?

In RHD it's not to going to be the most stable of cars is it with the weight of the motor and the driver on the same side.
I bet LHD versions handle much better

For once they actually mentioned how to deal with one of the ancillary systems, the power steering on the 944S2. Still no mention of heating and ventilation and it looked quite steamed-up for the demonstration drive.

Stopped watching them a few months back. Its just an advert really.
Too much money notting hill types want an old car converted. The do it . The end.
Last one I saw was some irish fella unable to muster any joy after they did major work on his old heap.
Deep down they know they are reminded of a milk float from thier youth.
They should add a rattling bottles sound when you accelerate lol.

I laughed at the Gordon Keeble episode that I'm halfway through. I may go back to it if there is NOTHING on.

He didn't want to drive it as it was a bit thirsty - yet he was happy to part with £40 grand to stick some Tesla motors in it.

It's almost as mad as spending out on a heat pump with an ROI of 30 years.

A lot (perhaps all) of their conversions have radiators and water cooling for the motors and batteries. I think that loop is used in the HVAC, but not certain.

And why is it always a Tesla motor?

Are there that many more wrecked Teslas to recover motors from than any of the other EV manufacturers.

For the amount they charge I assumed they were new motors! I did wonder if Tesla actually sell them.

£50k on the 944 and they didn’t go for the best quality carpets to keep costs down, they must see these people coming.
