What is the maximum you cant withdraw on a Visacard through a cashpoint ?

A guy is coming over from Norway to buy my car and reckons he has withdrawn £2500 in one go, says his Bank allows a max of £6000 over a 4 day period.

What ya reckon ?

Sounds suspect to me.

As far as I am aware, most cards are limited to £500 or possibly £1k per day as a maximum, as much as anything to prevent cash machines running out of cash too quickly! hehe

you can easily get your limit increased, so possible

I would agree that it all sounds a bit unusual.

As per the card, I always thought that the the limits are restricted by the credit status of the card holder. 6,000 in one period is a bit crazy I think, despite this some banks offered HIGH limits in the past.

What I would do if the man came all the way to purchase the car, would be that the transaction be done at the bank by the teller. Like this his identity can be verified as well as you are sure that you get legitimate funds.

He`s swifted £500 deposit, withdrawn £5000 in sterling in Norway (that`s all his bank had) and he`s gonna get £2500 byway of 10 x £250 from the ATM, says he`s done it before when he bought a car in Manchester.

He will be paying through the nose for getting cash that way! I have in the past been allowed to draw £xxxx's from the cash point but only by ringing the bank first and they alter the setting at the ATM so it allows you do draw more than normal but it was at a specified cashpoint and was with a switch card.

Can you go to a bank to check the notes are genuine before you hand over the car?

Depends on two things.

Who he banks with and the state of his account.

If he's a good saver or pulling in a large monthly wage his bank will (usually) allow him a larger limit on his card. Some banks are more favourable to people with credit cards than others. If he says he can do this then it's quite possible that he can.

caveat. I'm not saying trust him, simply saying that what he says might be true.

eta. I work in the Chip & Pin environment so have a fair idea and am not just talking out of my bottom.

I`ve just asked who he banks with and what type of card he has.

The only bank open in Faversham on a sat is Nationwide, I suppose they could verify the bank notes.

I just have a gold account with lloyds but i think any account with lloyds will let you. I know halifax is 300 quid a day

I have a Lloyds platinum account, never tried any more than £500, thought that was the limit.

Yep. There are only two main cards out there in the main stream market. Credit or debit cards. If he says he doesn't have a credit card then it can only be a debit card.

Well, that's his problem isn't it. Surely you've told him that you want all te cash up front? If he can't get in tonight, I suggest he gets a room booked somewhere and gets the rest tomorrow. Harsh, but don't be doing him any favours.

Ok. What people can take out on a daily basis is set by your bank. They set what you can take out based on the following criteria.

1) How stingy they are.
2) Your credit rating.
3) How good you are at saving.
4) What your income is.
5) How good you are at paying off loans / credit cards.

I`ve just told him, without the full amount, he`ll not be taking the car, so please to be sure he can withdraw that amount over here.

And before anyone picks up on it, yes I have let the V8 Astra go for £8000 and I knowI`m a f***ing idiot, but in 3 weeks time I`d have nowhere to keep it and its been up for sale since early Jan for offers over £10k with no takers.

So what else could I do ?

Im a cheapskate and didn't want to cough the extra up biggrin

But yes you can withdraw a lot i think. I even called the bank after and asked them if i was going to get charged and they said not its fine as long as your have the money in there
