Long notice periods...

I've known a lot of people on 3 months notice (myself included) and not once have any of them been held to it when leaving.
I guess it comes down to each individual employer but I think some take the view that unless they are really busy then holding someone who doesn't want to be there for 3 months can be counter productive.
I'd take a 3 month notice period every time.
I changed jobs last September and had a three month notice period. Managed to negotiate it down to two months and only had to work one of them. Got stuck on garden leave for the other month.I guess it comes down to each individual employer but I think some take the view that unless they are really busy then holding someone who doesn't want to be there for 3 months can be counter productive.

Its definately worth having a cushion in this environment. Also more often then not if you have a >1 month notice period the it'll be commonplace in the sector/ type of role so any new employer will be expecting it.
