I'm in a similar position - 2000 plate A4 and a '95 320, and I get people who's cars are worth more than the two together going on about it. I had grief from a friend of my wife's back when I bought the Chimaera. She's a dentist with a massive chip on her shoulder about how dentists train for the same 7 years as doctors yet can't call themselves doctor*. And also that I'm "just in IT" yet earn good money too.
Anyway, I pointed out that my car had cost exactly the same as the conservatory she had just had built and we each spend our money on what gives us pleasure, surely.
* - which has recently changed, so guess who is now "Doctor" rather than "Mrs"?

I never ever get asked how much it cost, which is a real shame as it was £350 as an emergency 'need wheels for a day' purchase and has since done 28K miles more 
Most oft asked question with t'other motor tends to be something about mpg. Never had any negative comments from work/friends/people about the car, but then it is a frightfully nice area we live in.
