Does anyone use this? £150 or £14.37 a month for AA cover and they will pay for the first £500 of any claim where it has to go to a garage as long as you keep it up to date with servicing.

Is it just me or is this a case of if its too good to be true? Anyone used this service and have any reviews as my steering rack needs replacing and I'm having to do it out of my own pocket and wouldn't have minded the AA to chip in to it for £15/month.

Me and the Mrs are signed up with the full package.

No need for it yet which I prefer.

4.4 V8 could be expensive when it goes boom and it will sometime somehow.

I'm a big fan of the AA.

For example, my clutch slave cylinder went a few months ago. They picked up my car and arranged a 4 day hire whilst my mechanic fixed it (no parts available and a weekend and a bank holiday!) which meant I was without car for less than 12 hours (and that was when I was at work!!). All funded by the AA. I was extremely impressed. Also, the car rental firm said they would rent me the car at the same rate the AA paid if I needed it for longer which seemed reasonable to me.

Good service from them I must say and a definite must for me!

Cheers

Just last month I signed up to this with the AA, like you I thought it was too good to be true so asked him to confirm all the details and read my cover book when I got it in the post.
Now the car is getting older and a chat I had with the guy at the Service Dept at my local Ford Dealer, I though well if my clutch goes I don't have a spare £700+ so it could be a great help.

Would rather not test it but we will wait and see.

I have used this for 5 years, and to date

springs x 2 = £250
water pump £400
Fuel tank: £500 (aa paid first 500 of a total of 800)

things to note from memory
1: I think they pay for labour at £ 50 PH max
2: Car has to be serviced at a VAT registered garage.

Always found them to be very fair.

Are there any age limits with this? I would be quite interested, one of the guys on the A8 forum has an S8 which the gearbox went pop in, and £500 is quite a useful contribution... Having said that I have just paid for a year's breakdown cover- Arse!

You have to have the policy in place for 14 days before you can claim. nono

Borrow the missus' car for a fortnight then wink No, I wasn't actually meaning that at all- He did have the policy in place for a good time beforehand. And I genuinely wouldn't take it out AFTER a problem...

This seems pretty good value after the quidco cashback at £100. I usually do my own servicing so would have to go to kwick fit for an oil change, but does this constitute a service I wonder. Off to check the smallprint.

Sadly my local spanner man just de registered for vat.

You don't even need to go for the top line package.

You pay £101.50 for the uber basic cover with the breakdown repair cover, just add the package on for £73.50

http://www.theaa.com/breakdownrepaircover/index.ht...

Package:-

Roadside – roadside assistance in the UK, 24 hours a day, every day of the year and help in the event of a road traffic accident. Extra benefits: 20% off airport parking, 20% off food at Moto

and

Parts and labour

Breakdown Repair Cover – helps cover costs for replacement parts and garage labour up to £500 (including VAT; less £25 excess) following a breakdown attended by the AA. Adding this costs from £73.50.

However the £150 package seems to offer better overall value.

I have used the cover on a blown turbo, zero hassle. Very impressed.

Could I take this out on my 1976 MGB GT? It sounds like a bargain...

My spanner man around the corner can service the car as long as its in line with manufacturer recommendations according the small print, doesn't have to be vat registered . There are quite a few exclusions but seems to be a good policy.

You certainly can, as long as they are vat registered from memory, and they have a cap on max labour charge.

I hope thats still not the case. I was reading around the site and couldn't find any mention of a age restriction.

I think I may give them a call on Monday. Sounds like its come in quite handy for some people

there is a surcharge for older cars plus an upper limit on age

Think the standard one covers cars up to 20 years then a further charge for cars older than this.

I took it out abut 3 months ago when the car was going through an unreliable patch...sods law that nothing has gone since!

It does look fantastic though! as pretty much the onlys it does not cover is zorsts, clutches (if due to W&T) and gearboxes (again W&T) but pretty much everything else is covered (Bar consumables such as pads and discs etc)

I (ALMOST) can't wait until I have to use it!
