Is a £10K 987 Boxster a pipe dream?
Discussion
I think i'd be more worried about bore scoring on a 987.1 S than the IMS.
On the flipside, the tappet-y noise was probably sticky lifters from having been sat around too long. A good Italian tune-up usually clears those (although, in the right circumstances i.e. someone who is non-specialist, you might be able to use that 'worry' to your advantage, price-wise) and i've experienced it on a few that i've test driven.
The 2.7 is a terrific lump. Although it tends to be 5pd only, 3rd is all the gear you'll need on some roads. It is quite long and that engine really changes character aurally as you push it up through the RPM.
I do agree that an S is within range of your budget but i'd be more concerned about scoring on one of those vs the 2.7 for some reason. A lot i've seen at sub-£10k have been a little ratty and make me think that they've been offloaded due to impending doom.
Last year, before going for a Z4 35i, I test drove a £9,995 2005 3.2S which was absolutely immaculate and had had a £11k engine rebuild the year before. It had been a makeweight in a deal for a Ferrari FF but it does show that with patience you can get a stonker for your budget.

Interesting, why did the 3.2 need the engine rebuilt? The 3.2's are meant to be less succeptible to the dreaded borescore On the flipside, the tappet-y noise was probably sticky lifters from having been sat around too long. OP - could be worth getting an inspection done if you want a mechanical once-over & even for the borescope issues, most can condict the relevant tests to see if the cylinders have these issues.
Porsche inspection are mobile & cover most of the South, or most of the Porsche indies will do a check for you either at their hourly labour rate or fixed price

A proper 'proper' inspection is worth it. But do avoid the FB 'i will do it for a few hundred quid' brigade, if you message tameracingdriver he will let you know who!Porsche inspection are mobile & cover most of the South, or most of the Porsche indies will do a check for you either at their hourly labour rate or fixed price
The 2.7 is a cracking engine just don't expect it to be a rocket. Needs about 4500rpm and up if you really want to shift which can be a bit of a pain if you're trying to overtake a car with limited opportunity but that occasionally aside, it is an absolute pleasure to wring its neck.
I much preferred how mine felt on 17" wheels, more communicative and still loads of grip. Loved the pedal set up for heel and toe but would have preferred shorter gearing to go with the fairly peaky engine to make the most of it as second and third are on the long side.

An MY06-08 non-S is said to be the safest option.

My 06 2.7 cost me nothing over the 3 years I had it. Great car. My R53 cost me more to run!
But it is important to buy a well maintained example. A neglected one with common issues that have been stacking up, will cost you in the long run.
Rusty radiators/condensers can be an issue in the UK. The lifter noise is common if it has been sat for a while.
Best of luck.

Thanks all for the useful insight.
I went to see and purchased a 2007 2.7 yesterday.
It needs a pretty good clean, but has been well maintained with works carried out when required and never missed a service.
There are a few minor cosmetic issues; the odd stone chip, some light scratches in the clear coat and the worst is a small (5p) sized dent in the bonnet. I’m going to contact a paintless dent repair company about that today.
When I can I will get some paint correction done.
The worst part was the car smelled of Indian food in the cockpit (not the end of the world) I bought an air con bomb on the way home and that seems to have resolved that issue.
So, here it is.
My daughters are already planning to steal it and go for it a road trip.

Wouldn't mind finding one myself, trying to see if I can warrant a 981S, over the past few years I've started to WFH and my mrs takes the car to work, GTD Estate and I've been thinking about getting myself a car but not sure if I'd drive it enough. Got my sights set on the 981 but a 987 could be a good tester to see if I'd use it enough to justify spending more! Anyone seeing any more peaches I can just impulse buy? haha

That looks very nice indeed. There are a lot on odd scratches on some of the panels. But I’m going to have a go at polishing it myself.
I’ve been watching YouTube tutorials and have bought myself a DA.
I was going to pay someone to do it, but the fact all the tutorials basically say the same thing I’m pretty confident.
I will post some progress shots when I do it.
DAs are pretty good, if you have a daily then practice on that first. Basically dont be tempted to over do it with the polish you put on you don't need much and do small sections at a time. And use a proper correction polish that isn't loaded with fillers.
I also bought myself a cordless spot polisher, is an orbital but its great for dark coloured cars that invariably show up very minor scratches etc.

My daily cost 4 times what I paid for the Porsche..I also bought myself a cordless spot polisher, is an orbital but its great for dark coloured cars that invariably show up very minor scratches etc.
I’m going to go very easy on it medium pad and compound only.
I need to figure out some sort of ceramic coat for afterwards though.
