981 Boxster GTS…am I going mad?
Discussion
Different people think different things, who’d have thought? It doesn’t mean what they think is rubbish, or mad. If no-one thought climate control was necessary, Porsche wouldn’t have it as an option, and/or no-one would tick it.
The good thing is, the OP is now aware of a potential pitfall to a particular option being missing. If he doesn’t care, fine. Can we move on now?

It isn't necessary, any more than having electric seat adjustment is necessary, it is just another way of Porsche adding to their profit margin. They obviously could have made everything standard in the first place had they wanted to.How much does cruise control cost as an extra, the only physical difference is the stalk and the cowling, peanuts to Porsche, but hundreds to the retail customer that had ticked it.
Yes, now we can move on.
Having recently returned from a road trip in our B25 to Italian Lakes and back where the temperatures were hitting high thirties every day in the afternoons and sometimes getting stuck in slow moving traffic I can definitely say having the ability to put the roof up and climate on full blast is an absolute necessity.
The B25 has dual climate, the 2 Boxsters before that and the current Cayman had/have the standard system. While the controls for both are fiddly, the dual climate is absolutely worth the additional cost and I would now not spec a new car without it.
As to whether it's a deal breaker on a second hand car that would party depend on the overall spec but 2 similar cars side by side the one with dual climate would get my money potentially at the loss of some other "essential" extras.
YMMV

My position: do what you like, I don’t mind, but for me xxx is necessary
Your position: xxx isn’t necessary and anyone who thinks it is, is wrong
See the difference?
I don't care what options anyone has in their car, I don't have to pay for them or drive it.Your position: xxx isn’t necessary and anyone who thinks it is, is wrong

If I do not consider certain options important (to me) I don't have them, simple as that.
Going back to the OP.
I have a Macan GTS and it's is so good I traded my F-Type for a 981S Boxster.
I actually wasn't bothered about the GTS interior on the Boxster as I feel the Alcantara makes it a bit dark, so was happy when I found a 1 owner low mileage S with every option ticked, all order papers, original invoice, OPC service receipts etc.
The 981 is just an awesome car in the 3.4 guise.
If it's not too expensive for you....life is too short......buy it, drive the s**t out of it and enjoy.
I would however negotiate for them for retro fit cruise

OP here.
I note a couple more higher mileage GTS’ on auto trader this morning, private sellers. End of summer sales or people deprioritising for coming recession (or worst) perhaps?
Have also been looking at high spec-ed Boxster S instead as power difference is marginal. Love the yellow S for sale at Redline up in Knarebrook. Just a little expensive and a long way away from me to go and see. But a lovely car. It’s missing Bose though which concerns me. Everything else is there for me though. Gorgeous car. Not usually my colour choice.
What are regular S tuning options? Anything g worth considering? Where does the GTS get its extra bop from?

The lack of the GTS front bumper on the 981 S model was a deal breaker for me, always reminded me of looking at an Se Bmw compared to an M sport, just look too plain, I think the same about the 718 GTS, when I ordered my new one, I had plans to change the front end to Spyder spec.
Plastic dash and no Bose on that car you mentioned, for me 2 things that I was not compromising on, my first 3.4 S had standard dash sound system plus and Spyder had leather dash and Bose, the later made it a nicer place to be for me and you spend a lot of time in there but as previously said spec is a very personal thing.

Almost no difference in performance between the S and the GTS, not worth worrying about in the real world, both sound glorious.I note a couple more higher mileage GTS’ on auto trader this morning, private sellers. End of summer sales or people deprioritising for coming recession (or worst) perhaps?

As another poster has said, the full leather trim is a must over the basic plastic dashboard.
That car is a nice spec and very low mileage at 10,xxx miles, but already got 6 previous owners so that alone would make it worth a little less. How can 6 previous owners (is it now on it 7th and you would be the 8th??) so such little mileage? It’s not an ultra rare car but seems a little odd to have one owner per year but each only doing 1,500 miles before punting it on.
Sure the OPC have done all the checks but looks a bit rich to me.

Agreed.I would have bought either, it is hard enough trying to find the right car with acceptable spec/options so widening the net is only going to make life a bit easier.
I particularly dislike alcantara and most GTS 981s I came across had it, so I ended up with an S which I am delighted with and certainly don't feel I am missing out on anything.

There is very little difference between the 3.4l and the 4.0l GTS let alone this one. An S with chrono is side by side with the 981 GTS.As another poster has said, the full leather trim is a must over the basic plastic dashboard.
The best bits on the GTS are the front end, the interior trim and the spec you get as standard, no brainer when new but the value over a good S is limited now.
I think if your after a particular spec the GTS kind of has it all, which finding an S with it all is very difficult. I originally started looking at S models back in 2015 but after seeing a GTS I brought that. You do pay more the for the GTS bit it seems more of a premium trim level, you'll pay more but you'll get more back too.
To me the GTS felt a much nice car, exterior and interior. I think the following differences between the S and GTS as standard.
PASM or X73
Sports Exhaust
Chrono
20" Wheels
Sound symposer (this makes a nice difference for the Boxster, its like 2 different cars with roof up and down)
Front and Rear Lights are different I believe
Front Bumper
Rear Diffuser
GTS Interior Pack - Option (Makes it really nice inside)
Go see both options, see what you prefer, its crazy right now thinking what I paid for my nearly new BGTS in 2016 is what you pay for the same car now. But that's what the market dictates.

A ‘private sale’ provides the buyer with very limited protection.
Personally, I would consider a private purchase, if the car was exceptional and the price was attractive. But, not without the Porsche Extended Warranty.
On a 7 year old, £50k car, the security of the inspection and warranty protection shouldn’t be underestimated.
The seller can add this, with this year’s Service, for c.£1,500. The buyer can’t.

Technically the buyer can, it would just be post purchase and at the risk of something being found requiring rectification. Perhaps a useful pre-purchase bargaining tool?Personally, I would consider a private purchase, if the car was exceptional and the price was attractive. But, not without the Porsche Extended Warranty.
