dedicated car for tip runs?
Discussion
Local tip to me wont let vans, large trailers (bigger than a small box trailer) or pickups in without a permit.
Occasional visit permit can be got for the above for free but only 1 or 2 visits a month.
I had to do this a fair while back while we were doing some work & it was so much easier to take stuff to the tip than go through the agro of getting a skip.
Especially as it was likely to take a good few weeks.
I ended up using a old xr3i that was picked up for the engine for a kit car I was in the process of. It came with a few months mot so ran that as the tip car.
It did everything we needed to do & when we had finished the engine was removed then the car was towed to the scrap yard.

Currently landscaping the garden in a house I bought last year. It's a pretty huge garden and is a total mess. So far over 100 trees have come down and most of them have been taken away.
A HUNDRED trees? OK, so we're talking a properly "pretty huge" garden - couple of acres? - not just a relatively large urban one. So... why not burn the greenery - or get the guys who felled 'em to chip it all, and use it as mulch? Or even just windrow the trimmings and let 'em rot down. If you've not got a woodburner yourself for the bigger bits, then why not flog 'em? Or, if you cba, freecycle 'em.If I couldn't spare the space for windrowing, I'd be burning, no question.
<thinks> Oh, wait. That's exactly what I did do with the 25-30 that we had down the other year, and will do with the ones I'll be bringing down this winter.
That sort of amount of land, you're going to be doing a lot of burning, so get started now...

It was actually nearer 130 lol. The last 60 foot conifers came down last weekend, now it's time to dig the stumps. I felled them myself. Chainsawed them up and put them into the car. Chimnea and 4inch branch chipper have both also been running full pelt. If I couldn't spare the space for windrowing, I'd be burning, no question.

It's more so clearing the ground now. There's loads of stumps 3 feef into the ground, dead ivy everywhere, other greenery etc.

Be aware that vans/pick-ups and some 4x4s can sometimes be denied entry to council tips by pernickety blokes in a Hi-Viz. Stick to estates.
Oh sorry for my recommendation then. I never realised this was a problem in some places. My local tip is always full of vans/utility vehicles , theres nothing better for the winter up in northern scotland too.caelite said:

mk1 galaxy/sharan or an 806
Remove all the rear seats and they would be way better than any estate. (basically vans but with glass)
eg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Galaxy-2-3i-Zetec-2...
Agree, I would say an old MPV is the way forward. The Chrysler Grand Voyager is massive inside (although horrible in almost all other respects...)Remove all the rear seats and they would be way better than any estate. (basically vans but with glass)

Or a Renault Espace, for a more stylish tip run. On the Gen3 all the seats are removable, leaving you with basically a domestic van as brman said.
My local council tip does not allow vans or open backed vehicles (e.g. pickups).
with a 1.5k budget for the car and adding fuel, insurance, tax, MOT, maintenance and some bork, its potentially a 3k exercise in year 1
there are plenty of man with van outfits around who would do a vast amount of shuttle runs for 3k....that's what I would do anyway, there will be no enjoyment in owning a minging estate that is full of soil and wet leaves.

A man and van will fly tip it. Plenty of people will take it away legally, it will cost more, but probably cheaper than the cost of the car. there are plenty of man with van outfits around who would do a vast amount of shuttle runs for 3k....that's what I would do anyway, there will be no enjoyment in owning a minging estate that is full of soil and wet leaves.

With so many people buying pickup trucks these day's as personal/leisure vehicles, can anyone see a change in attitude at these council recycling centers?
They really are the best tool for the job.
No chance, I think it's going the other way. My local tip now charges for bags of soil and rubble, doesn't matter what vehicle you're in.They really are the best tool for the job.

Even about ten years ago, I was being refused entry to tips in a van... A 2cv van...
