Expanding on my earlier post, an example.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202404289...

Less than £4k, and sub-60k miles. Heated seats, electrics all round, reversing camera integrated in to mirror, power doors/tailgate... As I said before, unfashionable, but IME a great all-round package for the budget.

Yes, we could get motability but then you get less DLA. At the moment, I’d rather have the DLA. I’ve just seen a diesel s-max. Looks pretty big in the boot, not quite as big as a galaxy but still bigger than a zafira.

However, it’s diesel! And I only do around 5000 miles a year. Mainly don’t use the car during the week as I walk the kids to school and cycle to work. So many mixed messages about diesels. Some people say it’s a nightmare with dpf, others say that it’s fine and they’ve done city driving for heads without it being a problem.

Have also seen a petrol smax but the eco boost/boom problem puts me off. Are they really that bad?

I quite like the elysion etc, however I do also like a proper boot with parcel shelf.

If only I had three times as much money to spend…
I've actually got a caddy on motability and have done the sums many times over. Yes you will get less DLA/PIP but i just cannot get the numbers to stack up to make running your own vehicle.

Over three years your 10k purchase price is £277 per month to repay your savings or more like £300 if you need finance, Insurance would be somewhere between £50 and £100 a month, realistically tyres, MOT and maintenance would be between £30 and £50 and if it needs something big like a clutch & dMF or DPF you could easily look at another £1000 big bill. Tax could be anywhere between £10 and £60 a month and then decent breakdown at about £15 a month.

So you could be somewhere between £382 and £525 a month, yes the car would retain some value but there could easily be higher costs if the vehicle needs unexpected work. Which is why i choose the motability option as i get a brand new fully maintained and insured car for just under £300 a month.

Just make sure you take it for a longer drive once a week you'll be ok.
Only needs to be 10-15 miles at higher speeds (50-60 mph).
The TDCi engine is a good engine, DMF is expensive to replace but that's true of any diesel.

Or there's the Alhambra or Sharan which have the 2.0TDi engine which is in literally 1000s of VAG vehicles.

I looked at a Mazda 5. Middle row of sets is nowhere near 3 "proper" seats. Couldn't get 2 child seats in leaving room for anyone else. Shame because the package is good - sliding doors, nice drive etc.

OP, I would think hard about your running budget as well as your buying one.

Old diesels get expensive to maintain, because they have more ancillary bits to go wrong: dual mass flywheels, EGRs, and of course the dpf.etc.

You may get lucky and none of these things will conk out on you, but the risk of a hefty bill out of the blue is less with something like a petrol engined Toyota or Honda.

In your shoes I'd probably go JDM. More hassle to buy admittedly but likely to pay off in the longer run.

A diesel makes no financial sense at 5k miles a year.

I also looked at a Mazda 5 as I like the sliding doors. But don’t think they’re big enough.

I think I’m down to S Max or Galaxy or Sharan. I like the easy flexibility with the seats of all those.

Now it’s just which one is least likely to break down. Ecoboost, or diesel….?

Had ford diesel, they’re reliable as far as I can tell. Engine is from Peugeot it’s a HDI even though they say it’s a TDCi. You can get a non eco boost galaxy as well I guess. My wife’s 1.0 eco boost is now on smth like 80k- admittedly it wasn’t me driving it because it would be a different story.
