Musk says TESLA Roadster will do 0-60 in under 1 second...

The amount of propulsive force needed to move a 2 ton car quickly is immense - stand behind the propellors at full throttle of a similarly weighted plane and now realise that that amount of thrust accelerates the plane at a glacial rate by comparison.
How will propulsive 'rockets', even if just compressed air pass any kind of safety legislation? What if a 6yr old kid was standing behind it?
Oh come on, it's not rocket science! How will propulsive 'rockets', even if just compressed air pass any kind of safety legislation? What if a 6yr old kid was standing behind it?

No one cares about 0-60.... people want solid 400+mile range with lower battery degradation and better cold weather range.... over to you musk.
Speak for yourself. I'm perfectly happy with 200 mile range and couldn't care less about battery degradation, whatever that is. Gimme great handing and an epic 0-60 thanks, although as previously mentioned I'm pretty certain 1 second is total BS. A top fuel dragster is IIRC 0.8 seconds the tyres of which rule out going round corners. Or driving on the road. It's also got 10x the power.Edited by thebraketester on Thursday 29th February 09:03
Autocar story has spacex rockets included, lol, good luck getting type approval for that in ANY country.
No-one really needs 0-60 in under 5 seconds, 10 seconds is perfectly acceptable and probably more fun as you are engaged in achieving it. If he had come out with a roadster weighing less than 1.4 tons range 700 miles, 10-90% charge time of 5 minutes and 0-60 in 5ish seconds for £50k now that would be way more interesting. 0-60 times = one trick pony.

I bet that if it even exists it's some ridiculous carbuncle like a detachable roof mounted air rocket system supplied aftermarket and therefore not certified for road use. But allows Elon to spew his bks. Kinda like the slightly stupid extra battery pack for the Cybertruck that costs $15k, robs most of the load capacity but allows Elon to claim range goals were mostly met. Battery degradation is the equivalent of buying a second hand car to find that you can only fill the tank up 60% full. And if you want to change the tank for a new one which holds the full capacity its gonna cost you £40k. It doesn't matter for leasers, but it will do for the sellers and 2nd hand car buyers.
Made up fact. Aka a lie.Edited by thebraketester on Thursday 29th February 09:03

Just clever marketing. Of course it will never actually reach 0-60 in < 1 second but the fact that Musk has said it will gets everyone talking about it.makes those that understand physics laugh
I don't doubt they'll make the Roadster go this quickly, but what I can't see happening is doing it in a road-legal configuration. I'd imagine the cold gas thruster part will do the numbers on a drag strip but not be seen at your local Tesco. Doesn't make the headline claim untrue, though.

This car is to be a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX and I'd wager that the engineers, particularly from the latter company, have a fairly decent grasp of physics, what with launching rockets into space and all.
Their last launch. I guess we have to bring that up. "Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly" is how they put it, I guess the do have a flair (ahem) for marketing. It RUDdy exploded. David87 said:
