Just like that, off the Yaris goes.

As a car owner you always wonder if you will feel that pang of regret when selling. Haven't felt it once, feeling so much more excited about the replacement. The Yaris was a brilliantly capable car and a pleasure to drive. But it didn't tug at my heart strings.

Did you make a profit on that, given the waiting times?

Is there a replacement incoming for the Yaris?

I pretty much got my money back, which is all I really wanted! The market does have quite a few for sale, but the prices have remained high, the only cars really going for overs are the latest reg and delivery miles cars.

Yes there will be something coming next year, I have had a chat and exchanged emails with a company for a Jap restomod. But I want to wait until things have been confirmed, timescales and all that before I get all excited.

It will be supremely awesome. Well, I think so anyway biggrin

Free motoring in a cool car. Good work.

How long until you spill the beans…are you going to get some renderings done?

Fingers crossed it won't be long. I don't want to lay it all out before some money has changed hands to commit to the build!

All the details are in my head, it'll just be transferring them out. There won't be anything stupidly crazy bodywork wise, but the paintwork is going to be inspired by the Renown 787B. Not a full livery copy or anything like that. But the green and orange!

I had an RX3 in mind when you first announced it, but that sounds more like an FC era RX7.

Spanner in the works, it won't be a rotary! But I want it to fit in with my love of the triangles.

I am nursing longer term plans for my RX8 that may include a 3-rotor NA conversion, but that will be a good while off yet.

Right so deposit has been paid and I am going to be one of those crazy people.

Been speaking to Bruce from Rocketeer to build me a restomod NA MX5. Really excited to have something built to my spec from the ground up, lots to thrash out and the rough completion won't be until August of '23.

But I truely think this will be something special to replace the Yaris. Journey begins now, oh and some more saving. Have told the wife she is not having anything for Christmas unless it is car parts.

Great move, will be something really special and only be more so as everything else goes turbo, auto, hybrid and then electric.

Rocketeer, very exciting!
Looking forward to this.
I know what you mean about the Yaris. My wife and myself really liked the idea of one when they were launched so booked a test drive. A great fun car but neither of us really jelled with it. My wife really struggled getting a just right driving position and I found it less pleasing to drive than I thought I would so didn’t go for it in the end.

Appreciate that! I'll try and keep this updated with all the photos. So people can get a really clear impression of the build.

Thanks man! I definitely want it to be something special. Bruce is getting a donor car sorted as we speak.

It is so close to being something that tugs at the heart strings. Extremely capable and fun, just didn't get the love. It turns out I seem to like front/mid engine RWD cars. That come from Mazda laugh

As we are pretty close to the end of the year, be rude not to give an end of year status on the fleet.

Now I started my new job at the start of November, so it has been an extremely busy last 6 weeks settling in and getting to grips with my new role, coupled with Kent's comedy long hosepipe ban the cars haven't had a wash since August.

But it seems as though I will be getting a van to go with my new role, which is excellent as that can be used throughout the winter and take the brunt of the poor weather, this should be with me early Jan! While I plan on driving my own cars in the Spring and Summer.

MPS

She has barely moved over the past 6 weeks, but took myself and my wife back to see my mum to celebrate her 60th the past weekend, with just a quick top up of the battery. The other cars will be taking priority over the next year and the MPS does not need anything specific at this time. With temperatures at barely over 0, she felt every bit as rapid as a turbocharged car could in the winter!

RX8

Amazingly, she has been my daily for the last 6 weeks. The site I am working at has a large amount of construction work going on and the 8 is the most scarred in the fleet, so if it accrues an extra scratch of dink I'd be less upset than anything else. This work is supposedly coming to an end soon, which should mean I'd feel happier taking the other cars to site!

Being only 8.4 miles each way from home means I get 2 weeks commuting to a tank......it almost feels economical biggrin

0 issues, starts on the button and has been good as gold. She is booked in for Service & MOT at TPS in Orpington towards the end of January. The longer I keep hold of her the more I really am growing to love her. So after I have focused funds on the Rocketeer build I am intending on starting to refresh the 8.

RX7

Ah the 7, she is still happily SORN'd but I have found a small leak in the rear hatch area as some water has frozen in the spare wheel well. So as soon as the weather starts to thaw I will go and have a little invesitgate. One of the main causes could be some little nylon inserts that have a rubber washer on them, this perishes and allows water down by the rear lights. I have managed to track down the part number H260-50-6K8 and ordered 20.

I have also ordered the pillowball bushes from Nengun and are on their way from Japan as we speak. Apparently I am to expect delivery on the 25th December! Will wait and see what the import duty is, hopefully the damage isn't too great. These are the last piece of the puzzle for the suspension bush refresh that I am planning in April/May time.

Rocketeer

Exchanged a few emails with Bruce as the donor is still being sourced. Nothing huge to report yet, I keep thinking of the spec I want and visualise the end product. But I am not expecting anything major till March/April at the earliest. But I am taking all the overtime I can get to make it a truely special little build.

So what to expect in 2023.

The RX7 will hopefully be all refreshed suspension wise, I may try and get the steering rack refurbished at the same time as I intend on leaving the car with TPS for them to take their time and get her all sorted. Seeing as there was play in the rack when the alignment was done at IA Motorsport this would be an ideal opportunity to tick that off the list. Really hoping scope creep doesn't crop up as I reeeeeally want to put the majority of my funds towards the Rocketeer.

This will be the year of the MX5, I'll put almost everything behind creating something special to me. I hope a few of you will also enjoy the journey as well. I intend on being there for the engine being dyno'd and dropping in throughout the build as it also gives me time to spend with my family who are in the area.

No longer being a shift worker means that I really am hoping to actually get out and use the cars and attend a few more events and meets, like a normal person!

Just read most of this thread from the beginning, sounds awesome! Shame the Yaris had to go but I guess it seems to be the only one that actually just works perfect with no real upkeep / maintenance along the way, which maybe you like biggrin I wonder what the values of those will be in 5 or 10 years from now as most things depreciate so maybe they'll become even more accessible for those wanting to give them a go.

The RX7 is awesome though, definitely a goal ticked off I'm sure for you. My equivalent would probably be an Evo 6 right now but I'm 24 and probably going to have to look in the £2000-3000 range for my own car unless I get some help or wait a few more years, but not really driven for 3 years and not much in general in the 6 years since I've passed, so makes sense to work up I guess smile Also may be trying to balance years down the line whether to jump into something if I know it's going to hold value or appreciate, or let compound interest do its magic (if I can find a decent account / investment to build that)

Also not sure if a mod is doing it manually, but how do you change the subject title of your thread because I don't know?

For me the Yaris is quite boring in comparison to what the OP is used to I reckon. So if I was in his shoes I would've got rid of it too.

Thanks for reading, I hope it keeps everyone a little bit entertained and informed. Make sure you tickle your dreams if you can, unfortunately I have real experience in the fact that loved ones aren't making it to retirement so as long as you are sensible scratch those dreams while you can.

All you do is report your own thread and ask extremely nicely for a mod to change the title.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head, it also sounded the least soulful of all of my cars. As I seem to be learning, it is a huge part of the driving experience for me.

So the RX7 threw me a curveball.

As I keep her outside (garage purists look away now) I regularily pop out and check on the car, seeing as she is over 20 years old you cannot quite trust rubber that is that old. So I do some due diligence.

On popping the boot quite a bit of water came sloshing out by the boot struts, more so on the left hand side. Instant "Oh poop" moment, leaky Mazda fully confirmed. Now as the rear wiper has a little plastic bowl it sits in, in the boot trim I guessed that it had acted like a bucket. So popped the trim off a bit and saw the following.

Wet booty confimed. Now as the rear wiper is pretty much terrible the easy option is just to blank it off, so that is what I did. Or as the kids call it, a rear wiper "delete".

So yesterday I managed to squeeze in half an hour after work, in the failing light to get this done. I really wanted to get it done as if any of you live in the South East will know, the weather forecast is extremely wet for about the next week.

The rear wiper arm came off far too easily. Spidey sense tells me that someone in Japan probably removed it previously before putting the car back to standard.

Boot trim came out very easily and no clips appear broken. They will stay in the garage for a bit to dry off and I intend on putting some trim tape/sound deadening on the plastics to make sure they won't rattle. Belt and braces approach and all that.

The wiper motor is one electrical connector and 3 bolts attaching it on the underside. With a nut threaded over the arm that sits on the topside. Remove all these and some rubber groomets and we have the following.

Plastic threaded plug with rubber washers installed with some loctite on the thread to make sure it doesn't come loose and we have the following.

I then conducted the super scientific. Watering can, dump a shed tonne of water over the plug and see if it leaks, which it didn't. So all fingers crossed if we get a dry spell over the next few days I won't have loads of water sat in the car.

Just an example of what I found on the grommets from the removed wiper assembly.

Whilst removing the boot trim I discovered I am a parcel shelf clip missing which also helps hold the trim in place. So I phoned up Mazda who said they are £3.60 each, perfect I'll take 2 so I have a spare. Part number if anyone is interested is FD01-68-301-02.

Honorable Christmas mention to my wifes Peugeot 308, which she asked me to swap the battery on Boxing Day. Which involed removing most of the right hand side of the damn engine bay including airbox to do comfortably. Hateful thing!
