Hi folks,

1998 996C2. 110,000 miles, recent MOT, serviced 9 month ago. Oil leak from rear right of engine just inside right bumper. Looks like a short pipe around 3 cm diameter but i guess it could be coming from somewhere else. There's a thin, 1 cm metal bar coming down vertically and the oil's coming off that.

Was driving fine all day. Travelling up a steep car park, I parked at the top after 12 ramps and noticed that for the last two ramps (only) there were spots of clear oil on the floor. I restarted the engine after a few minutes, revved to get 4 bars on the oil pressure and no further oil came onto the paper I've placed under the source.

Am I going to die?

Those photos are from the rear of the car? Looks like an oil sump to the left - I'm sure someone will correct me.

Mine started dripping oil after the winter thaw, turned out to be the cam tensioner seals (which are aluminium and corrode). See if you can trace it back to a ~2" nut (on one side it points down, on the other sideways). Was a 30 min job for the garage.

Best of luck.

So, did this turn out to be brake fluid?

Nope - finally found out that it's the hydraulic fluid for the steering. Phew (I think).

Spoke to specialist and now plan to top it up (it's completely empty) and check it on the way home. It's making a noise at the moment like, well, like a pump that's doesn't have any fluid.

I may just get it transported back with the AA and bag a hire car actually.
