It's an OG M2 in that one.

Mind if i jump on this too, as i am in the same process, looking at an M2 vs M240i, though mainly sold on the M240i as it does what I need. So does anyone rate the previous versions of the M240i, 2017-2020?

I ask because I am not financing, only looking at cash purchase and mainly looking for an M240i. Am aware the xdrive would be better but not sure it was available in the older versions in this age range so all of them are M240i RWD only. Is it still worth it?

I basically want to make sure i am making the right decision. My head says pay £20K and get the M240i. My heart wants a 2017 M2 i've seen for £26K. But before everyone shrugs and says "of course get the M2", let's not forget the additional costs that come with it, not least whopping great insurance costs.

Given it's a weekend driver only, seems a bit, i dunno, grandiose to go for the M2 when i wont get enough use from it and an M240i will do the job.
I had the previous gen M240i which is the version you are referring to here as opposed to the new M240i a lot of the posters are discussing.
It received some criticism which I thought was very unfounded personally from my own ownership of three years. It wasn't quite as sharp as a full fat M car but as a daily driver on normal U.K roads I thought it was superb. I think the addition of an LSD would have made a big difference but I still think of that car very fondly, mine was standard except a stage 1 remap which I would do again.

I traded mine in for an M4 which is an amazing car but I still look at the M240i and smile whenever I see one, definately one of the best cars i've owned for overall experience.

Thanks this is helpful. I need to test drive it, but recently took an M2 for a test drive and I’m in love. But as I said, just seems so pointless giving how little I’ll drive to go out and buy an M2. I need someone to tell me getting the M240i is the right thing in this decision and not do something stupid.

I think the thing is that it's a head vs heart decision.

When I bought my M240i I couldn't afford an M2, it was more a decision of M240i or M235i.

When I came to buy my M4 It was a choice of M4, 440i or 540i, I love the B58 engine and the sensible choice would have been either a 440i GC or 540i, especially when I factored in the running costs of a full fat M car are significantly higher than a non M car, consumables, insurance etc. Ultimately though the heart won, I saw it as my first chance to own a full M car and went with it and no regrets at all.

My 2 pence.

I was considering all of these options, and decided on a manual M2 comp. The reason I decided on this is that I want my fun car to feel alive. I enjoyed the fact that the M2 comp wanted to bite my head off half the time, it kept the car engaging.

Thank you! This is the one I am looking at now, I think it’s the same model - the latest one with the curved panel instrument screen?

I would expect a bit of ‘heft’ as the 4wd system would be a penalty on weight, but in the other hand - the all weather ability must be higher?

I found with the M2 comp, it was a REAL handful in the wet or damp, greasy winter conditions, to the point where the Mdiff was working overtime - even at 5 tenths in those conditions, so in reality unless it was bone dry & above 15-18 c, it wasn’t really ‘hooked up’…

Similarly - GT4 - with cup 2’s… pretty hopeless unless similar dry conditions. I played follow the leader to a cupra a few weeks back, wet, greasy, and generally not much fun, I wouldn’t have wanted to keep the pace for very long tbh…

M4 Comp - xdrive, no problem… but it’s a big old girl on B roads…

The M240i is specced with the adjustable dampers also - I think that’s a ‘good’ to have? Does yours have them - any real need, not sure what you reckon?

I can basically get an M240i - latest model - for what I was paying for the M2 comp - in 2019… I know it’s not a full fat ‘M’ car, but I bet in anything but perfect conditions - the M240i would be as quick or quicker…

I think given the tech of the xdrive - that’s a pretty good deal, given how much prices have gone up in general since ‘19/‘20…?

Thanks for posting - much appreciated:-))

Sorry for delay in replying ... I see you have driven one.

Mine is indeed the curved screen as a 2023 and also has adaptive.

As I didn't want to wait for a new one I went for an ex demo but had to miss out on HUD and reverse cam + HK stereo. The stereo on it is actually ok as comes with BMW's second tier ... plus I rarely listen to much on the move anyway. I do miss the reverse cam as am lazy and the cars visibilit compared to my X3 M40i is awful.

I would not buy one without adaptive and I also have the sunroof - I had pano on the X3 so was used to more light coming into the cabin. I prefer that even if I don't use it much I prefer that to having HK which I feel is an over priced option .... really missing the reverse cam ... which can't be retro fitted yet either ! HUD was nice on my X3 but I can't say I miss it with the new dash as it is so good compared to what the X3 had and they are different cars.

Good luck if you are continuing to look. I really love mine and they are so rare. It goes well with my 'Just use oil' T shirt biggrin

Cancelled my purchase frown

Bit sad about it but was the right choice. Will return to the market in a few months when my need for a second car becomes greater, otherwise it'll be sat on the drive doing nothing.

I have a 2023 M240i X Drive alongside a family Taycan 4s. Prefer the BMW all day long, although I do drive it in London. Would recommend. I see why some struggle with the styling, rear seats etc; buts it's a proper performance bargain. Agree it needs adaptive and a few options. I have the cognac interior which gets a lot of positive comments.

It called itself for a service at 15k, which was around 500quid for oil filter replacement; otherwise consumables were not needing replacement.

For the performance seems a bargain. Love the the M2, but RWD scares me a bit (not a driving god). Dealer informs me the M2 CS is coming to order later this year, so very likely to order once books open.

Things really took a change over here. I did / do really like the M240i, it’s a great car for the price point and the tech on offer.

It was a strange set of twists that brought me out if my GT4.

In the end - me dealing with the OPC directly - the BMW dealers cocked up the purchase of their car - as I became ‘free’ of the part exchange loop. This opened the market for me.

What I wanted, was to get back to the sure footed days of 4WD - on B roads, here in the UK. short drives, max 20 to 30 miles, mostly really just for pleasure.

The M240i was ‘too much car’ for what I needed in the end, that despite the MASSIVE and I mean massive discount I could get on one in February 2023…

I find myself with a 22 mile old, December 2023 (I mistakenly wrote 2024 originally) registered GR Yaris on the drive as of the last week.

Wow - what ever you do - DO NOT DRIVE a Yaris GR4…

You will buy one if you love driving, a la, Impreza Sti or EVO Tommy or VI or VII era EVO…

I have regained my driving zen, it’s been 15 years in the coming - thank you Toyota… :-)) thank you very much indeed…

My blind spot was that I couldn’t imagine how 3 cylinders could pull that hard, and how a 4WD system in what appears to be such a small car could be so compliant, grippy, forgiving and generally brilliant.

Until I drive one!

Someone said: ‘Going from a GT4 to a GR4 Yaris - that would be quite a move - no one has done that’…!!

I can tell you, as of now, on the same roads - without rain, the Yaris feels just as capable of the GT4 pace, add in even a touch of wet / grease - and my GT4 wouldn’t have seen which way the Yaris went.

For the price point - and for what I need it for - it’s really a no brainier switch.

I loved my GT4 - dailyed it for a year, but I love the Yaris for very different reasons… it’s equally an icon in its own way.

Great stuff…!

Got a G42 M240, as mentioned - the performance car bargain at the moment.
Faster than my old M4 F82 in normal driving - mainly due to xdrive.
I don't have adaptive dampers and tbh it isn't bad, I have tech/pro/whatever pack so run the 19's with run flats. Yes it can feel bumpy at times but it's not a problem for me.
It doesn't have the epicness of the M4 but that met a sad end and i wanted something awd.
