...I am interested though, being a future buyer, how easy it will be to spot any lemon and advice on this would be greatly appreciated.....

First thing anyone will tell you is to buy Steve Heath's book on Griffs and Chimaera's, commonly refered to on here as 'The Bible'. Available from the TVRCC and worth every penny (especially the latest edition).

Armed with 'the bible' I went off and bought one privately and havent looked back since. If you do buy privately I would advise that you get a TVR dealer or specialist to check it out first though (not The AA/RAC).

Darren (Humph) - this is an extract from my recent Spanish trip diary and, for me anyway, sums up the whole reason for TVR's existence... the risk is far outweighed by the good times

"Looking down into the valleys as I climbed higher and higher, I came to opinion that this was possibly the most beautiful place I had ever been. Added to this, the glorious burble echoing behind me, the ease with which the car took the twists and climbs, the whole atmosphere… and I was as close to motoring heaven as I think I’ll ever get."

'nuff said, if it collapses tomorrow it has given me a driving experience that I don't think will ever be matched - good luck, get one sooner rather than later!

Have to agree with Al on this one. I've had my Griff for 3 1/2 years and I've had a few things go wrong with it that have made me pull my hair out, however my trip's to France and Spain makes it all worth while. The reception you get driving these cars over Europe is just fantastic! I don't think you would get this reaction driving many other cars that haven't cost 60K upwards.

I had a griff 500 for 2 years (approx 3 years ago now).

I bought it with 5k on the clock, and 1 year old, we did a lot of miles in it;approx 23k over 2 years, and it was used in all weather, great car, but did have the following wrong with it :

1) New Rad
2) 3 new starter motors
3) new wiring loom
4) Complete top end rebuild at 18k
5) Manifold gaskets
6) electic window motors
7) numerous other small "issues"

It cost me a small fortune in the end with depreciation, running costs, repairs etc, sold it and vowed never to buy another TVR, 3 months later bought a Tuscan and thats another long story....
