Been running Norton 360 for years, never had any problems and I can't member any warnings.

So this morning I have an appointment at Surrey County Hospital, thought I'd check where I need to go, open up a floor plan and all hell breaks lose, warning messages etc but coming from Mcafree which I dont use Stupid me for not using the hospital website

Quickly switch off laptop, what do I do here ?

Switched it back, see a message telling someone is trying to load files, do I want to stop this which I obviously do.
Then come up messages advising me me to buy Mcafree to keep myself virus free.and asks me for bank details, obviously the scam.

All of my online financial stuff uses two stage authentication, the rest I don't care about,

I don't seem to be able to get Norton to run a scan,

I guess I'm going to get the Mcafree warnings until I enter Bank details, I could enter valid details, say HMRC tax payable account and let the scammers try and take some of their money.

How do I get rid this ....or put it down to experience ?

Luckily I've got Microsoft 365 so all doc's and photos are backed up and I have a spare laptop that I can use, just an old with no working keyboard and rather slow,

TIA

Thanks folks for the advice.

I turned 365 off straight away, if they want to hold me to ransom to view some holiday photos, I’ve got copies elsewhere on memory sticks.

I’ve stopped pop up’s appearing, it’s so simple if you know how or just lucky. Rather than closing the pop up with a left click on the mouse, use right click and it gets added to the list of site to prevent pops from.

It just seems to take ages trying to find what setting are where, I used to do full Windows installs many years when the whole of Windows fitted on five 3.5 inch floppy discs!

Have run full scan with Windows Defender, nothing found which is a bit annoying.
so, guess best do a system restore to be on the safe side.

Moral of the story, next time I need to go to Surrey Country don’t check the floor plans before you go!

BTW I went to the hospital to get my eyes examined, everything OK turns out I need to see an orthoptist, that’s a physio therapist for the eyes!

99% sure its just spam notifications, which you have blocked. If you have a dig around in your browser settings you should find the offending entry which you can just delete and it should all go away - no need for a system restore.

My mum had one recently caused by a facebook link to a fake youtube video.
I think youre right I can find exactly what was doing, opening up a flloor plan image from a list.
