"under questioning from MP Therese Coffey, who had suggested that civil servants were well paid, Harra responded: ‘I am this month having to give nearly a third of my staff, including all the helpline advisers and the staff who work on the post teams, a rise so that they can stay with the national living wage."

Yet people wonder why they get poor quality answers from HMRC without realising that the person dealing with with their complex tax query is paid less than a till operator at Aldi who just has to mindlessly waive items over the barcode scanner.

I think I would rather a till operator at Aldi to be handling my tax, honestly. I would probably have been repaid what I am owed.

Probably because they haven't got the bus fare to get into work

Time to address the scaremongering that suggests HMRC will invariably find and penalise anyone who even slightly fails to pay their taxes.
In reality, HMRC employs a huge amount of unskilled workers who can't keep up with their workloads biglaugh

Says who?

WFH in this type of role is generally productive since there are various management systems to ensure that you are working when logged on. A call centre handler cannot, for example, just not take calls, the system would flag it straight away. That type of work has a fixed and measurable deliverable.

Isn't there a difference between the minimum wage (as per the thread title) and the living wage (as per the quote)?

Who ? HMRC said

Looks like the model is really working huh . Its a cancer spreading through the entire civil service ( translate : people paid by tax payer to do a function ) Ever increasing ( dramatic) headcount and ever downward spiralling delivery . Like I said, clearly working.

That's a correlation, not necessarily causation.

The HMRC said what? From what I can see, the HMRC permanent secretary Jim Harra says the opposite of your statement.

For workers aged above 21 there is no difference between the NMW and the NLW.

Poor joke maybe but the NLW is and always has been a poor joke on the lifestyle it can afford.

You're on about the real living wage and not what the current government calls the living wage. Agreed.

National minimum and living differ only in marketing terms and age brackets when it comes to government output.

An obvious conclusion is that they don't think people under a certain age should earn a living wage but it's just semantics and not worth worrying about as it's missing the bigger picture. The government set minimum living wage does not meet its requirements.

The Living Wage isn't the National Living Wage

When looking at the living wage, it is important to note that there is a difference between the NLW and the Living Wage.

The NLW is set by the government and is an hourly rate that is amended each year. The Living Wage is set by the Living Wage Foundation and is calculated based on living costs in the UK.

Ok you are right . If the boss of the ( Failing ) org says so , it must be true . Good to see Jim doing such a great job since he took over.
Maybe you are just trolling me. I'll drop it, I am too busy working for the Post Office systems compliance team ( from my holiday home )

Oh I forgot to mention, I have a new FX business offer I can cut you in on...its a dead cert
