Bolton Abbey might have been nicer for a walk apart from the rain. And that my 6 year old got stuck half way across the stepping stones. And the daughter of the family we stayed with threw a stone at and hit my daughter's head. And my 2 year old wasn't being very compliant. I could go on.

I thought the £8 was for access/entry to the Abbey, but it wasn't. It was to park. £8 for about 3 hours - Seriously? Grr.

The parking issue/charges reminds me of the time I holidayed in Cornwall, we were doing a small tour over a week, the first day we parked in an English heritage car park and the lady said do you want to join it will be cheaper if you're thinking of driving around and seeing places.

Well how many car parks do you own? I thought to myself, and said no thanks....every bloody place of interest had a EH car park attendant!

We go to Whitby (and Scarborough) a fair bit and, a few weeks back, we stayed for 5 days. Each day should have cost about £5-6 for a days parking, but being a bit careful and knowing Whitby well (and Scarborough by accident), I didn't pay for parking all week.

I didn't park much further away than the pay carparks either.

Suppose we could have helped you better thinking about it again. For instance the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is much better than the Yorkshire Dales Railway, which as you say doesn't quiet reach Bolton Abbey. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal near Ripon might have been better value than Bolton (though further to travel). As you say Skipton Castle is just Dull, but both Middleham Castle is good.

But the biggest issue I expect is the Children, the Dales is better for adults, walking and driving than for Kids. Seaside or Center Parcs for the little ones, that's what we found anyway.

You were very unfortunate with the weather and I do feel for you

I changed my car at the end on May and got myself a 2nd convertible
and up to the last couple of weeks it has been top down weather all the time

May be cheaper with a local "guide" next time as there are plenty of free or in-expensive places around

Better luck with the weather next time

I now boycott all the car parks at Bolton Abbey after I arrived at 4pm one day and they asked for £8 to park, even though I was only going to be there an hour furious. They refused to budge on the price when asked too. Ridiculous.....
