4 bedrooms for £160k in those areas? rofl Good luck with that one. In fact you'd struggle for £260k never mind 160.

I always think to myself I'd much rather live in a smaller, even to some extent a not so nice house, in a nice area than a top notch house in a terrible area. You can always work towards making your own situation better, you can't single handedly improve the community or your surroundings you become a part of when investing in a property.

I have worked and commuted to Bradford for the last 10 years, I could have moved closer to work to save over an hour a day in commuting time but never even considered it. I don't mind commuting apart from driving through the middle of Bradford twice a day.

My other half had to temporarily move into BD6 for a few months, at which point her car insurance quadrupled so we had to lay her car up whilst she moved out of Bradford again!

Have you tried looking around the smaller towns on the outskirts of Huddersfield and Wakefield around J25/J26 of the M62? Both I would say within an hour commute of Leeds and possibly Sheffield depending on where the home and office is and your mode of transport.

The majority of Huddersfield is just an extension of Bradford in terms of demographics.

Another option might be to head out towards Selby. Not on the 'traffic' side of Leeds and goof access to A1/M62. Also good for heading into the countryside.

what, at how cheap it is?

Luckily OP doesn't rent in London where £775 would't get you the square root of diddly squat.

Back on topic, nothing wrong with Bradford at all. Being honest, when I first moved up from London I didn't like Yorkshire at all. That goes for both Leeds and Bradford.

I used to live in Ilkley [one of the most sought after areas] and hated it, moved to a nice part of Bradford in a lovely house and we are very happy.

It's actually a reasonable enough place, a lot of the 'horror' stories are ill founded. My wife and I looked at Leeds before we settled in Bradford. I've never looked back.

Find a house you're happy with smile

Best of luck op.

I wont have a word said against Huddersfield.

Birkby? Certain other areas but the vast majority is beautiful and open space- lots of open space within easy reach. Its also stone-built.

When the Tour De France came through and the man in the 'Yorkshire' float/car was shouting 'yorkshire!' 'yorkshire' - man I welled right up.

Isn't it full of students who couldn't get into a better university biggrin

As with most places, Huddersfield has its ahole. Places such as Birkby, Fartown, Deighton, Paddock, Newsome and generally anywhere within a mile of the centre is generally pretty ste to live!

Go further out and there's some lovely smaller villages such as Flockton, Shelley, Shepley, Denby Dale, the general area around Holmfirth, Marsden (insert sheep joke here) etc etc.

Its a big'ol place is Huddersfield! Even a night in town is pretty decent these days with more and more real ale bars opening up that don't attract the undesirables!

Ilkley is a marmite place. I like visiting (Bettys) but will not live there... though I live in the area at the moment.

One quote sticks in my mind - they have a French market every year, close the roads, usual load of rubbish (not really French stalls, overpriced junk).

I asked a parish councillor why they didn't have a Farmers market (even closing a bit of the carpark once a week) and support local producers - given there are some really good ones.

His answer "Ilkley is a spa town. We are not a market town. You can go to Otley and Skipton for those sorts of things".

Full of snobs.

the walking into a pub on your own and instantly making a room full of friends thing is probably quite dependent on who you are, and where the pub is. I'd anticipate that if I ever tried this, I'd be instantly vapourised in a hurricane of aggression.

Q: How do you know someone is from Ilkley?
A: They'll tell you.
