I'm off to Whitby tomorrow for 5 days - nothing we haven't done many times before, but I'm after a little inspiration as to what to do with a 3 and a half year old boy and a 7 year old girl.

There's the obvious beach suggestion if it's nice, Pannett Park, trip over to Scarborough (but what?) - but I'm after something else that might be worth considering.

All ideas welcome smile

Thanks

JTW

Possibly not the best time of year to be there with kids. York (and the Railway Museum) is definitely worth a day out, although its 30-40 mins away. Its nice to walk around the walls if the weather is reasonable. Also around there are the superb driving roads to the North of York, with the market town of Helmsley, and Rievaulx abbey.

Ever been fossiling or looking for Whitby jet? Pretty much all the pebbly beaches around there can yield both and it is easy to waste a couple of hours, but you need to know what you are looking at.

There's a fishing lake at Pickering bend the railway station, that can be a laugh for kids.

The in-laws have a big new static up at High Hawsker so it's a "free" holiday hence the frequent visits. Not the best time of year, but it's at least comfortable smile

Rent a big row boat down on the Esk, if they are open.
Falling Foss is worth the drive and will be deserted at this time of year....
Crabbing....the kids will love that.
Robin Hoods Bay.....Staithes......Pickering.....NYMR is a must do.

Another vote for Eden Camp, and much of it is inside.

Can't imagine you can get to York in 30-40 mins when anything is open.

Loads of great walking, driving, eating and drinking in the area. Oh and queue for fish n chips.

Lol, no idea at all why I said that... My brain does odd things sometimes.

Go the scenic route and take a couple of hours. Farndale is known for its daffodil display, they should still be out when you are there: http://www.real-whitby.co.uk/farndale-daffodil-wal...

If there is any mobile data access in the caravan, this is a handy site for identifying passing marine traffic http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/

If you're at Hawsker, you could bike ride along the railway line, not sur wif you can still get onto the viaduct, but certainly close, if their legs will push that far!

Seek out Boggle Hole for some fantastic rock pooling. Check the tide times though. Some facilities at the YHA mill for you. http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/boggle-hole
There is a cave to get scared in & even found a lobster there!

For some good food I can recommend the Elerby Hotel and the Runswick Bay Hotel (the later also has a great beach).

Dalby Forest isn't far away and they have some good walking/biking routes (you can hire bikes there).

Update:

Well, we went on what was clearly the windiest week of the year, but the view from High Hawsker was great:

Monday was spent on the beach and watching the "pirate" ship going a long way up and a long way down - we opted to NOT try it out

I remembered about the battered Haggis and had to have one for lunch. I didn't eat until the next day, it was HUGE

Tuesday we went to the Dales - I forget its name, but it took us a while to do the short journey cross country but we found a great visitors centre.

On the way back it snowed. A LOT.

Wednesday - we went to the hideously overpriced Playdale farm which the kids LOVED:

Thursday was another sunny day on the beach with the obligatory digging - My daughter did the start and I had to finish up. High tide was at 4 so we had just enough time to do all this:

And a video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aZUj2BbfcI

Followed by a sail up the river:

Not a huge doing on Friday but I needed this by then:

Its been lovely in Whitby this week! The pirate ship is a quarter scale replica of Capt. Cook's ship Endeavour:

No, I've never been on the small one either biggrin
