Congratulations!!! Wise purchase (I may be biased as I've owned a 5, two 5a's and a 6a - I kept the 6a for over 10 years!!).

Everything on them is sortable, but interior trim can be fragile and difficult to find.

The RSSOC is a great club and a font of knowledge and people willing to help.

The value of them was always supressed by the fact the bodywork was expensive to fix properly, and they almost all suffered from micro blister etc... (there's a reason for that too!).

I see you're in Kent (I used to be but now in West Sussex) but if you need any advice, just PM me - there's a myriad of fixes and tricks to hep with the whole ownership experience. driving

I loved mine and would have another in a shot (but the Cerbera may have other ideas!!).

Thanks very much Rob (& others).
Being ignorant, why do they get micro blisters on the bodywork? How can it be prevented - lots of polish??

I believe it is moisture in the gel coat which makes a bid for freedom. Some attribute this to the process at the factory where the bodies were stored outside pending top coat.
I have heard that car covers are a bad idea as it traps moisture and makes the cars sweat. I think the blisters can go away if the car is left in sun but really the only answer is a respray which is pretty much the most costly enterprise on these cars. "buy on paint"

Had a SE5a for about 10 years I think, in a weird blue colour. I thought that it had enough power back then and it's still a good looking car today. Mine had a Ford Essex V6 engine with overdrive on two gears I think, and I believe the steering and suspension was Triumph.

I joined the RSSOC and had loads of the Slice magazines, still have them I think. I remember changing the front seats for aftermarket ones from a Scimitar specialist. Mine had SS exhausts and never had a problem with them, also had a glass sunroof. Trunnion failed once and damaged the fibreglass bodywork when the wheel collapsed. Bodywork did suffer from a bit of cracking and crazing.

Definitely more good memories of the Scimitar than bad ones. Good luck with yours.

Good luck with the car. I confess I was very disappointed with ours, but maybe it was just a bad un. We owned a Jensen GT, and thought it would be like a bigger version of that, with useable back seats.

An LS should liven it up!

I always thought they looked good but then other manufacturers started to offer alternatives like the Volvo P1800ES, Lancia Beta HPE and in a way the MK3 Capri - had two of those in 2.8i flavour.

I'm not quite sure why but for a while I liked the idea of a Scimitar GTC!

How is that coming along? I have a SE5a and was putting a small block chev in my 66 C20 when I dragged the hoist over the the Scim and tried to put it in. Even with block huggers the steering column looked like it would foul and I'd have to chop half the bodywork away in the engine bay. The chassis rails were spot on however.

OP, if you are going to take the engine out get the longest possible hoist you can or do what I do and use an excavator with the blade down. The engine bay is looooong! Also, pics please!

Chassis rails fine, it’s a bit tight where the manifolds go (= custom) and yes I’ve had to hack the bodywork a bit. I’m using a Spitfire quick rack mounted differently to the Scimitar rack too. There’s a few pics on the Modified Scimitar page on FB… one below to whet the appetite!

I bought a SE4 3 litre V6 by pure accident. I was driving home from work in Oxford mid 1980s and passing a garage in Summertown (taken a short cut to avoid traffic - Oxford traffic was bad then, today it's f appalling!) when I spotted a 'sloping roofline' that at a fleeting glance 'looked' like a Ginetta G11 coupe. Remember I did say a 'fleeting glance', all I could see was the top of the roof.

I didn't want to stop and the chances were virtually nil, but then thought christ, what if it is?
So I span round and drove onto the garage forecourt. I should have known it wasn't a G11 'coupe' (only 2 were ever made and I had 1 of them).
Still looking today many, many years on!

Plust what would one be doing in a secondhand Rover dealership? Mind you, it was still way different to the normal stuff on the forecourt.
A sales rep grabbed me and asked what I was interested in. I explained my error and he said why not buy it, great price?
It was, about 750 quid if I recall. Christ, what are they worth now? I went for a drive and he was desperate for me to buy it, so I did.

Forget how long I had it, about a year or so, then we decided to move house. I liked the car, it drove nicely. But you can't keep everything. So what's gotta go? The Scimi sadly. I made a profit of about 3 or 400 quid. Last I heard it's still on the road, and probably worth 15 or more times what I paid.

Oh yeah, I still haven't found the missing G11 coupe - the one pictured is the actual car, chassis no. 1, I have no. 2 (mind you, nor have the others who are still searching for it!).

As Fru t Bun(?) said, it was mainly due to the original painting process and they did indeed store the shells outside due to a lack of space inside!!! Hence water got into/under the gelcoat and it often did a good job of hiding for a number of years, before making an appearance!!

Then, of course, they weren't expensive cars to keep on the road, but any bodywork was quite expensive to have done to a reasonable standard. That led to a multitude of poor quality paint jobs which added to the original problem. They're all solvable these days, but not cheaply!! As the cars themselves are appreciating, there's more of a chance of them getting expensive paintwork repairs!!

And of course, do check the timing wheel to make sure you're not on the original fibre-toothed one. It should have been replaced, preferably for a stainless steel one, which is another fix that needs doing properly! (worth researching but ask if you go down this route).

Ah, the joyful days of Scimitar ownership!!! I'm sure you'll enjoy it - I know I did! driving

Lovely! I also managed to squeeze in a supercharged holden V6 and had it mounted and almost ready to go before a financially crippling stupid idea to run it in historic racing.

I love the Scim though. Terrible build quality but such a great shape.

A long while ago - possibly '70 ish I saw one of these at Doves (BMC dealer) in Addiscombe, Surrey. It was old english white, or at least something very similar.
Obviously no help whatsoever in your quest though!! smile

Also the hex oil pump drive, I rebuilt a V6 and a V4 after this happened.

Very good call!!

I'd say the following are imperative to sort on collection, if they haven't been done already:
Timing wheel,
Hex drive for oil pump
Carb pinning
Trunion check (you don't want to lose a wheel!).

There are other things, but these would be on my "must-do" list!

And then get driving it!! driving

Thanks for the advice. It’ll likely be early next week that I pick it up. It’s having a new clutch fitted before then & an MOT done.
I know that timing gear has been replaced & updated. I will check through once I have it & see what has/hasn’t been done & then get sorted if needed.
Will also put up some pictures when I get it.

I now have the GTE, though with going away last week, haven’t done many miles. I’m taking it back to the garage, as it’s misfiring off & on. Hopefully just a set of leads, as timing gear has been replaced & plugs 18 months ago. Really enjoy driving it & does sound good. A few pictures -
