It’s pretty sad to try and get something badged up as something it isn’t. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a crappy version of a DB4 Zagato, a 250 GTO based on a Datsun or a Cobra kit car. If you can’t afford the real thing, I really don’t get why you’d bother, unless it’s some weird insecurity about trying to show off some bit of tat that resembles something the owner can’t afford. There are always some decent (and genuine) substitutes to be had rather than just lowering anyone’s standards to Chinese fakery.
How about "because the prices charged by Rolex for something as basic as a watch are simply silly" ? Rolex are veblen goods. The price has sod all to do with cost or quality and everything to do with marketing. Why do you bother to pay that much to know what time it is? Because other gullible individuals( plus muggers) will look at your watch and think " he can afford a Rolex!"

The car argument isnt valid because the likes of an MR2 dressed up as say a Ferrari 355 wont perform like a 355 and wont look like one either. Maybe when you get to the well engineered Cobra copies its different, but then if they not only look like a Cobra but also perform like one then you are back to the argument of the only difference being how much you have been ripped off by.

The joy of wearing a watch is entirely internal to me, most of the time it's under my cuff so I don't care who sees it.

Wearing a fake would imply to me it's a show for everyone else, as there wouldn't be that joy of knowing you own the actual watch you're pretending to. Only one of us is thinking, 'Oh wow a platinum anniversary Daytona..?'

Seems similar to the custard test, I can tell the internet I have 3 Zondas, 2 Bugattis and a 250 GTO because I want you all to think I do.

But I don't, and it's actually a little sad if I go on pretending to you and myself that I do.

No. Grow up.Trying to justify fraud by saying something is too expensive anyway isn't far short of burglars who say "Well they've got such and such, why shouldn't I have a bit of that as well."

Personally I couldn't care less what kind of watch somebody else is wearing, whether it's a fake or a genuine.

Somebody else's watch has no impact on the enjoyment I personally get out of my watch. My enjoyment of it's quality/engineering/whatever isn't damaged one iota if I'm surrounded by 20 people wearing fake versions.

The only thing that is "damaged" is the image. It's not going to have the same effect on other people if there are 25 of us in a room all wearing "expensive" watches. Shallow people won't be as impressed. Even worse, they might asume mine's a fake as well.

Fortunately we PHers don't wear a watch for the image, or try to impress other people, therefore those people who have bought a fake for £300 purely for the image....well it doesn't matter at all, does it? biggrin

Get over yourself man. You’re the epitome of the worst kind of watch snob and a hypocrite to boot.

My £30 Amazon smart watch packed up on holiday on my first swim so being in Turkey with tons of fake stuff in every shop I thought I’d invest in a Wolex.

Keeps perfect time and cost the princely sum of £75.
