The Freedom may look futuristic at a squint, but it's not that pretty or well finished when you look at the photos in more detail - the class of ships that Freedom belongs to have also been mired in controversy for budget and time overruns, and the vessels not being entirely suited to task.A weird way to launch a ship if you look at the youtube vid

I hate to rain on your parade, but sideways launching is very common for smaller ships and boats!
IK Brunel's Great Eastern was launched sideways. Eventually.
Ships can still sink if they are launched stern first. In 1907 the new Italian liner Principessa Jolanda rolled over and sank, after launch due to bad ballast calculations, not only was it on launch but it had also already been fitted out.
