I have a 1ft wide approx sewer around 6 ft deep. Its under my decking and i had to remove the top so the decking was flush. It's black plastic. Would a rat be able to climb this. I thought about constructing a cover inside it or applying Axle grease all inside to make it slippy. But unsure if rats can actually just climb up something vertical?

They can’t climb a 6ft vertical plastic shaft.

Unless there’s fousands of ‘em and the form some kind of rat tower.

Won't that stink especially in the summer?

Like a rat up a drain pipe, really depends on how clean the pipe walls are.

If there is plenty of debris a rat can get a grip on I wouldn't bet against it, did you cover the open end with mesh or similar?

Most black plastic drains I have seen don’t stay as shiny plastic and I think a rat might be able to climb it, they are also amazing jumpers.

3ft high jump and a distance of 4ft horizontally apparently.

I think that would be 4 if their tails had a dose of viagra? I would put the shoulders to feet height at about 8-10 inches?

I'm happy t o delegate you to get in there with the measuring stick. But some of the rats I've seen swimming around Southampton marinas are big enough to be tory MPs.

But surely the sewer will vent via this now?! I suspect you will be refitting when it starts heating up in the summer biggrin

Given the buggers ate their way into two mobile classrooms through the floor, to get to the children's left over packing up, in a couple of days over half term....I'm going for yes, probably!

Kitchen waste may be cleanish, sewers tend not to be one ended though, as the rat army will attest.

However they will chuckle watching you smear axle grease around the pipe from their alternate position in the garden.

Get it capped off properly is the only answer

I've seen a rat run up the corner of a vertical painted wall, just shuggied its way up like a ninja.

Plus it will stink, cos that's what drains do

I truly can't believe that you would think it acceptable tbh
