He will now get the opportunity to explain how or why he had those objects to a jury, unless he simply pleads guilty.
Your statement isn't going to be difficult, although I'd be surprised if you didn't get called as a witness, right up to the point he changes his plea. Visiting you again would be a terminally stupid thing to do, and almost guarantee his conviction, along with other charges. Stupid he may be, but I doubt that stupid.
Result! Well done.

ETA:
NFA, What does that mean?

No Fixed Abode
ETA?

My guess is that all charges will be dropped and you'll never hear from him again. If he does appear at your door again feel free to hit him a slap as you were fearful of you and your families lives

I wondered too, initially thinking no further action but reckon the chap has no roof over his head . . . allegedly.

Given that it's England, and there's a good chance he'll get the 150th stern talking to this year and be sent on his way, I'd be keeping something by the door just in case. Perhaps "his" knife, that he might just attack you with before you wrestle it off him, or a can of something nasty on the eyes - fly spray or similar.

Don't mean to be all keyboard warrior, but if you're not powerfully built and confident of taking him down physically then you'd want all the help you can get.

Good job though, sounds like you got a scumbag caught.

If he's no fixed abode, I stand to be corrected, he will be unlikely to make bail? Perhaps any Bib reading this could chip in?

I'm not sure about going equipped because he didn't actually have it on him. He could argue he was looking for another bag, and however improbable that seems it would be hard to prove otherwise.

Unfortunately, as per above, I reckon he'll get a warning and be out again soon.

Apart from the likely fact that his prints and DNA are all over the gear.

Yeah, it's not like the drug-crazed violent psychopath is going to remember where the OP lives, is it?

Spoken to the police again this morning.. He spent last night locked up courtesy of them, so ironically wasn't NFA for the night, though he will be again tonight smile

Police have said "going equipped" is difficult to get to stick via CPS and what did I want to do re statement.

I have two schools of thought on this and this is what I outlined to the Bib. I am reticent to proceed with a statement, highlighting my house and I as objects of retribution, only for the CPS to refuse to proceed, by which time MC Hammer may have returned to mine to exact a little revenge...... Equally though, the thought of some little st mooching around the streets identifying peoples hard earned belongings to steal and being so pre-meditated about the whole thing really fks me off.

Clearly someone/people were going to wake up today having had a visitor for the night, and if I can meaningfully contribute to his day in court then I should do so....

However, the bloke is more than likely a living definition for recidivism and repeat offending, so what is a day in court and a fine gonna be worth? NFA = extremely unlikely to face any meaningful consequences for his light fingered theffery, whilst I run the risk of actually coming out with tangible losses........

Thoughts anyone?

Man Up + make the statement. He is even more likely to come back and visit you if he knows you are a pussy.

And if you don't make the statement and he does a little old lady's house next - how good will you feel then?

It is a difficult one, and a sad state of affairs.

I'd have nothing to do with the police as it will no doubt end in a cock up and even in the unlikely event that he is convicted he won't get much of a sentence, and it will make you a target for retribution. Secure your house, keep an eye out for him and perhaps warn neighbours about what happened.

If you do give a statement he might be prosecuted and he might not. But If you don't give a statement he definitely won't be prosecuted. I'd imagine that a factor in his lifelong recidivism is that people are loath to give evidence. I'd give the statement.

Which is easy for me to say as it wasn't my front door he was banging on.

Make the statement. If people don't make statements then the police are wasting their time even coming out to these incidents, and these "repeat offenders" are free to repeat their offences without the fear of consequence. Hammer Guy is going to remember you as the guy who called the police regardless of whether you made the statement.

I agree with that, I can see why you would hesitate at making the statement. I don't envy you for being in this position.
