I usually start with 'Hi Bill' or sometimes 'Hello Bill' and sign off with 'Kind regards'

'Dear Bill' or 'Yours sincerely' seem never to be used nowadays

But what if the colleague's name isn't Bill?

Do colleague's who aren't named Bill get annoyed?

If it's an internal email (i.e. replacing a phone call) I would probably not bother putting their name at the top - it's in the to: field in any case. I might just go with "Bill," though.

Internal e-mails are pretty informal at my place ... Everyone knows everyone, so why not? So I use 'Hi/Hey' depending on whether I'm good friends with them, and then sign off with a 'Cheers!'. Obviously I type more formally when sending e-mails to external addresses smile

That depends. I have different layers of 'formal' depending on whether they are male/female or trustworthy/tell-tales, or indeed perverts/well-adjusted.

I hate receiving e-mails with no greetings.

In my place it's

Hi, Hey, Sup, Hiya (we're in Wales) and sometimes Word Up,

Ended by,

Cheers, Thx, Ta,

Followed by the first letter of your first name.

Unless you're handing down a bking, or you really don't know them I see no sense in pointless formalities unless they're the type of person that prefers it.

Lack of a greeting or any use of the words "please" or "thanks" and signing off with an initial means they're a fasttrack high-flying executive with no time to waste. Certainly not on bench warmers like you.

Everyone I work with has 15+ years on me, so emails are not how they have always communicated (whereas I have been used to emails since starting my working life).

My MD for example will always type an urgent email out in BLOCK CAPITALS which always seems a bit ott. Just mark it urgent, ffs. Or flag it...

My boss used to complain about me not topping and tailing emails to her properly. After a couple of days of sticking "regards" etc at the bottom, i changed it to "love". Took a couple of weeks before someone else pointed it out to her which proved how much attention she paid to it.

I don't know why but it irritates me when people address me with just my name.

"Adam

Blabla bla

Regards
Ignoramus"

I much prefer to see this:

"Hi Adam

Bla bla bla

Regards
Legend"
