On the 20th May the Sir William Morris Lodge (No. 10003) will be doing a passing and then afterwards a private visit to the Aston Martin OC Museum just outside Oxford if anyone is interested

Saw this on Reddit:

Anyone know what the deal is with the elderly gentleman with suitcases you see around Holborn?

I work around this area and quite regularly I will see (usually) groups of elderly gentlemen in dark suits. They are carrying sort of awkwardly square black leather briefcases. (The briefcases are a bit larger than normal and more square, like they are designed to carry unusually shaped documents).

I keep trying to work up the courage to ask them if they are in a secret society of some sort. But I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on if these guys are Knights Templar or something more boring and ordinary.

Apparently it’s Freemasonry related. Can anyone shed any light?

Assuming this is serious and I'm not due a whoosh parrot; Freemasons' Hall, the chief lodge (United Grand Lodge of England according to Google Maps) is in Covent Garden. On the corner of Wild Street and Great Queen Street so not far from Holborn tube station.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area and have even a passing interest in Freemasonary.

Was a sincere question, at least on my part! What’s the significance of the particular type of briefcase?

It fits the regalia - more specifically the apron. As you become a more "important" mason the apron gets larger, so the case needs to be bigger.

Also get's a badge on it which means you can no longer fold the apron in half and stuff it in a back pack (or carrier bag .....)

The only one I’ve seen was a historical demonstration of, I think, when the first settlers into the US formed themselves into rudimentary Lodges, or similar. I recall the demonstration team was based in Norwich & maybe called the Maids Head Lodge. I dare say our Norfolk brothers will put me right on the detail.

There are other research lodges that also seek out bits & pieces of historic Masonic ritual etc & then perform demonstrations.

A fair while back (10 years+ ?) I saw one from Northampton way (?) who did a demonstration at a meeting I was invited to in Watford. I did have a pen with their name on it but made a mistake of leaving it for people to use when signing in with the expected result.
Was quite good fun as they set up the Temple with tables as it would have been in a pub, though they did fake the drawing of the tracing board as the centre would not have been impressed by chalk drawings on the carpet.
