Could it be "low range".The certain older models had it fitted and some imports

What does the white text next to it say?. Or is it not your car?.

I would guess it is some sort of diff lock or low range selector. Maybe even a free wheel/neutral so the car can be towed.

Not my car, but I am looking for one soon, picture was from a 2006 2.0R.........

Do they need a low range mode?

Are there any diff locks on these models?

Since it is next to the other object called a gearstick, that wouldn't be a particularly good name for it..
