Go to the Great Dorset Steam fair at Blandford if you want to see vintage heavy machinery being put through its paces. Highly recommended.

Yup, been there the last 2 years and watched the HH demos - both traction engine ones and truck ones. Unfortunately I dont have any footage as I was driving one of the other engines in the ring at the same time!

A quick bump!

Had the pleasure of these 3 Collett Heavy Transport MAN units (Including a fairly rare F2000 Roadhaus in the middle of the convoy) heading south on the A1 yesterday en route to a local wind farm site with 3 new turbine blades a piece! -

Yes, it was a bit tongue in cheek!

However they are massive , where are they going?

Those massive yachts come through the centre of Cambridge quite often.

Perhaps not *quite* as large as the previous one i saw passing through here a little while ago if i'm nitpicking, but another fairly sizeable Fairline yacht wended its way past along the A1 early on Monday afternoon! -

The BiB put in a rolling block a little further up the road so the load could pass under the bridge unhindered (Theres always seems to be some knob in a white van who tries to cut 'em up!...)
Coming direct from the Fairline factory in Oundle. I've just seen someone else picked a few shots off of this rig up passing along a residential road in central Cambridge again! yikes

Nice! Hard to top the Heavylift boys TBH! cool

Great vids. They do run some very interesting prime movers do ALE it must be said! You've got their unique (In this country anyway to the best of my knowledge!) Vienna built OAF 8x4 running ballasted along with their two Faun beasts in the first vid there. Looks like a fair old lump of metal on the cradle there! yikes

They move big components from various power stations to on and off shore locations so i assume thats what the load is a part of!

Nice to see their ex army Unipower in the second one there, thats one truck i'd really love to see on the move, pure beast! biggrin

Well, as it happens.

I work for them.
Or should I say did. Quit this month for new pastures.

That stuff is mere hand luggage for the area / scopes I look after.
We have a 45,000Te skid / move next year.

smile
Aah! nice one! biggrin

Christ, that skid move sounds epic! Must need some serious kit to handle something like that i bet!... yikes

How often does a load like that get moved? Are these sort of loads regular or are they infrequent?

I saw six of these, loaded with tanks, heading clockwise around the southern section of the M25. Had to drop the windows just to listen to the huge motors pulling.

Question - what sort of power plants do they use and how much torque do they produce?

Those ALE tractors, how are they controlled when they are linked up like in the last set of pictures? Each one have a driver and they just feel how much throttle they need to be using, must be more technical than that?

Oshkosh HET version for the British Army.
Caterpillar C-18 engine, which is an 18.1l six-cylinder in-line turbocharged and after-cooled diesel power unit that can produce 700hp and 2,576Nm torque at 1,300rpm. The vehicle provides the necessary power to move its 118,050kg GCW (72t Challenger II tank) at a speed of 80km/h on tarmac surfaces and 38km/h on a 2.5% gradient. The transmission used in the 1070F is the Allison HD 4076P, seven-speed automatic with TC-561 torque converter and second-gear start.

Thanks for that, trying to work out the torque in lbs ft, is that approx 4,000lbs ft?
