How would I go about derestricting a 2004 Sprinter 311)? It's an ex-DHL van and we use it for work but the 73mph restriction is unnecessary and IMO more a hinderance than it is useful.

As it is just a van and not required by law, I would assume that it is just an aftermarket thing that has been fitted. Have a look around the fuse board for signs of an extra fuse floating about somewhere, they stick them behind the panel on most of our vehicles to stop them being easily accesed by the driver.

It might be programmed via the ECU, some have to have the restriction removed by the dealer.

A 311 will only do shy of 90 flat out and legally can't do anymore than 60mph. Probably a ECU jobbie.

Pfft, it's a Sprinter, probably not even getting into it's stride at 90 hehe

I've often wondered when I see vans that have been limited, if the person that authorised the limiter has his company car limited as well. scratchchin

Yeah, 90 is about tops for a 311 and would be a much better option for more pleasant motorway driving, especially when trying to overtake the idiots who sit in the middle lane at 70.
3.5t vans aren't limited to 60mph though, maybe you're getting confused with dual carriageways? Limits for 3.5t vans are; Motorway 70mph/Dual carriageway 60mph/Single carriageway 50mph.

I'll have a hunt around near the fusebox and see if I can see anything. I've read a post on a US forum that says if you turn the key to the start position (apparently the starter won't turn once the engine is running) it disables some limiters. Yet to try that though.

Mercedes restrict the speed at DHL's request. They were doing this before the current lgv speed restrictions came in. I know you can have the re stricter removed. I believe Superchips can probably do it for you. I do know from experience ( I spent a couple of weeks testing maps for DHL on these vehicles)that a normal software remap will up the power of a DHL Sprinter, but the speed stays capped.

Ah - so not much point in hunting around behind the fuse box then. Not going to be able to do a map on it, oh well - we'll just have to get used to impatient idiots flashing while trying to overtake MLMs.

Its a Mercedes Sprinter mate....You are legally bound to drive up the MLM's arse at a distance normally measured using a micrometer driving

Unplug the speed sensor and use tomtom as a speedo? Just a thought, it would drive me mental being restricted in a van

A Mercedes truck/bus/van dealer will do it for you. I seem to recall having the ecu limiter adjusted for not that much money (although it was 12 years ago). I have this recollection that it was £20 or so, only takes a few minutes on the computer to sort it out.

90mph my old 04 plate 311 work van was good for 110 flat out on private land of course .Bit scary fully loaded but you learn to be careful. The new ones we got are restricted on ecu by merc. But can be removed at dealers

Im amazed they havent made limiters law on the bigger class 7 vans yet, they did 7.5 tonners just when you ether had to be fairly old or take a test so it didint make much sense when the 3.5 ton vans hurtle on with spotty oiks at the wheel driving on a car licence sometimes obviouly overloaded and often at stupid speeds !!! personaly if I was paying the insurance, repairs and fuel they would be limited, 100 kph would seem sensible.. over about 70 mph they realy drink fuel...

Yes, sorry was thinking of dual carriageways and the larger 400 series Mercs.

Whoever said a 311 Sprinter will do 110 is quite frankly talking out of their arse.

300 series are cat B vehicles are due to their weight are 50-60-70 single -dual- Mway NSLs

so unless it;s miraculously become an Emergency vehicle there is little or no reason to remove a restrictor which is already set in excess of the NSL for the class of vehicle.

as for some of the claimed speeds out of vans that might be the indicated speed but I suspect it;s not the actual speed - most vans are beginning to get really rather scary at a true 90 mph.

Flat out down hill from jct 37 goin north 110 regularly. Grew up and thought on was driving like a berk. But being a spotty oik at the time is no excuse.
Most you'll find me doing nowadays is 75/80 on motorway it's more than enough.

No thats silly as bib sit on the parking pad with speed gun regular just before 39 north. I Mean the big hill from 37 down to 38 the sculpture park turn off.
Thats one big long hill.

In the past I thought mercs were the dogs doo dahs ! Then 2 years ago I started driving them.horrid horrid things !
Gutless thirsty uncomfortable basic noisey things !
Spoilt by the other vans on the fleet.3.2 5cyl 20valve td transits.flying machines !
