Purely out of curiosity do you guys get a daily meal allowance so you can eat in restaurants?

Why wouldn't you be able to do that? You still get paid, money on the credit card etc.

Although I know that the foreign guys that take all our jobs here (Sweden) don't get paid alot, like 1/3 of what I get paid, so thats why they're hired I suppose.

I only wondered if it was a perk of the job, or did they have to stock up the fridge on the truck (if they have one, i have absolutely no knowledge about driving jobs)

Pretty sure that some may have paid meals by the employer, I have on long journeys, but most don't I guess.

For our drivers they have a tax free £17.50 "overnight allowance".

As mentioned above, most park in a layby & eat food from home, supplemented by fresh from local shops as they use the allowance as a part of their salary.

No, I cook my own food, my truck has a built in fridge which makes carrying food easier.
I personally am salaried, I get a set amount every week, if I have to do 3 drops I get extra, if I get pissed about I get extra, if I change my own wheel I get extra, if I have a ferrybreak I get extra.
Most drivers do it because they prefer driving in Europe to driving in the UK.
British lorry drivers are in the minority now, I travel abroad every week and some weeks mine is the only brit truck on the ferry.
TBH I could earn more money in the UK but detest driving here.

Thanks for the insight Mike, if i could ask another question. How long would it take to take a load from say, Edinburgh to Carcassonne. In the car I think we could do it with a night stop over. Just curios as to how much the different speed limits affect things. I would hazard a guess that it would take 2 stopovers for you guys.

Well you can work it out, driver hours allow 9 hr normal days & 2x 10s a WK, on empty euro peage roads even at truck 56mph you can crack 500m a day in a 10hr, not even close to that on traffic filled roads tho.

Edinburgh to Carcassonne in 2 days, I can't see that, you'd be into the 3rd day, unless you are taking vans, in which case its a 1 day run for those guys!I've done similar in a 20hr stint when younger & dafter.

Oxford, Stratford on Avon, Munich, Salzburg, Stuttgart, Luxembourg, Stockton on Tees, Reading, was this wks run well took the Fri of last WK too.

Ref food abroad, I'm partial to a bit of German sausage! Ha! Fnrrrrrr

Ref food, on my last job it was a bit of a mixture. When we were on site at a gig, all the food was provided for us, as we had caterers with us. On a good day we'd get 3 quality meals a day, plus an overnight sandwich bag, (we were spoilt!)
Once we were back on the road though from gig, too gig, we sorted our own food out, either in a decent foreign truckstop, or a cook up in the truck.

Edinburgh to Carcassone, as long as you want to make it really?
I can normally do Basildon to Barcelona in approx 17 hours driving time, but thats in a wagon at 56 mph. Basildon to Edinburgh in the same truck, 8 &1/2 to 9 hours.
