Van MPG varies massively by brand and also how fast you are driving.
A Luton van driven down the motorway is pretty much going flat out because of the (lack of) aerodynamics. The well used Transit Luton I hired about 10 years back did significantly under 20mpg on the motorway. Next time for a long trip move, we hired two smaller vans instead which used about the same amount of fuel in total and more carrying capacity.
Also, remember the maximum payload of a Luton van with a tail lift is not much more than for a Vauxhall Combo, so you can't legally load them anywhere near full unless you're carrying really bulky lightweight items like sofas or insulation.

A 300 mile jaunt down the motorway could well use as much fuel as moving house yourself over the course of a weekend for instance.
