Danesgate said: Nil depreciation - in fact, some appreciation in value. £62/year insurance with nil no claims (limited to 3k miles). Nil road tax. Cheap parts (I pay under £200/year for service and MOT) Cooler than any of the suggestions so far. and in the winter..... A winner I think.

I had a look at these some time ago and found that many were very rusty and those with repair work were often highly modified for off-roading and greenlaning. But I still like them. In fact I think I have only seen 3 three this year so far, one on the side of the road at a farm out in the sticks (not sure if roadworthy), one for sale on a main road, and I think I've seen another as well. Doesn't the SJ have leaf suspension like series Land-Rovers? Love the Land Rover suggestion, and the more obvious Skoda Felica and 106 1.5d options. Don't forget the Rover Metro diesel; now not a common sight. Like the Land Rover, the Morris Minor has very little depreciation (in fact aren't values rising?), no tax, cheap insurance and parts are cheap besides the car being easy to service. However maintenance needs to be quite regular, and more frequent than more modern cars (consider the K11). Would the use that this vehicle will get not warrant something like a van with back seats? I remember in 2007 looking at cheap small vans and stumbling across a surprisingly large number of Ford Courier vans with back seats. Also there is the Berlingo Multispace et al.

Did the SJ have suspension? It was primative to be sure. As for the Berlingo, you are better off going for an old van. The Multispace/Teepee type cars are holding their values too well for some unknown reason. I assume people with kids must be suckers for punishment.

Volvo 740? I'm liking the K10 ideas, daily driver for me. Acquired it from a chap as he had to go in a home. It's people carrier, van, tractor, you name it. Not the fastest machine in the world but there's nothing better for nipping into parking spaces and has a turning circle London cabs can envy. Just over 100k now and still going strong.
