Volvo XC90 - Thoughts?

I used it for couple of weeks 2005 model and TBH felt that 2.4 D5 is inadequate for such a heavy car....
Volvo should have developed a 6 cyl. 3 liter engine for such a beast!!!
Erm...they do, and have done since 2003.Volvo should have developed a 6 cyl. 3 liter engine for such a beast!!!
Ours is the XC90 T6....6 cylinder 3 litre Twin-Turbo (petrol)...or were you being sarcastic?

I think he meant a diesel.
IIRC driven around town or quickly the T6 averages around 13mpg - which is unacceptable to most people
Completely unacceptable...I've had a T6 for the last 18 months done about 12000 miles. It had been freshly LPG'd when I bought it which was essential as it's averaged about 16mpg in this time. To be fair it is mainly used about town school run etc. so the average speed is 29mph. On a run from Scotland to Ireland last year, mainly motorway and A roads I got 23mpg over 1000 miles average. I knew it would be thirsty, but this is millionaire league for running costs. The LPG tank is relatively very small when the economy is this poor which results in having to fill up every 130 -150 miles, or cry as it runs out and switches over to unleaded burning its way through fuel at twice the priceIIRC driven around town or quickly the T6 averages around 13mpg - which is unacceptable to most people
My MOT has not long cost me a fortune as the parking brake failed resulting in my garage having to strip the entire interior out of the car to repair (seriously) landing me with a £450 labour bill. It's also needed suspension bushes, 2 drop links, 2 front callipers and 4 tyres amongst other things while I've had it and I'm in constant fear of gearbox failure but despite all this I love it. The stereo is the best I've heard, it's fairly quick, it's comfy, practical for kids, usefully large, safe and looks like a bit of a beast.

If we didn't use it for towing the Horsebox (that is the only role ours is used for) it would make no sense at all to keep such a car.

Take a look on the Volvo owners forum - lots of unhappy owners on there.
Take a look on the Disco owners forum, the ML owners forum, etc etc - they are all full of horror stories as this is where people go to complain - compare those stories to the number of cars out on the road and its not probably that bad. I'm not saying the XC is unbeatable, just not the sack of bolts some people are trying to make out. Every make/model has bad instances, the OP needs to be aware of all possibilities and buy accordingly.trouble with big 4x4's is that they are all complicated machines and will cost a bit if/when they go wrong - as said before, i'd rather use a trusted indy than the main stealer. Most have the aerodynamics of a brick and weight the same as a small house so performance is never going to be setting your pants on fire...

True but then take a look at the MX5 forum - hardly any issues except rust but that is on 20yr old cars.Or look at the Land Cruiser forum for a complicated 4x4 - not many problems there.
It seems to me that manufacturers don't have time / money to spend on their niche models.
I meant diesel and that's why had referred to D5...I know like Honda Volvos entered the diesel Engine Game very late and have used more or less same 2.4 Lump for more than 10 years!!! I stand to be corrected on this ???
Surely they should have gone in for a bigger engine for XC 90 & XC 70@that time .....
It looks like they keep on extracting maximum from D5 and have now managed to push it upto to 215 Bhp on XC70 & 200 on XC90....I am conscious of the fact that along with BHP pulling power is also important and that's why People go in for Diesel!!!

Sorry, I see what you mean and I agree with you....the 2.4 D5 engine has been largely unchanged since 2002.Surely they should have gone in for a bigger engine for XC 90 & XC 70@that time .....

Volvo really do need to sort out a 3litre Diesel.
The XC90 2.4D5 wouldn't pull our loaded-up Horse Trailer anywhere near as effortlessly as the T6 power-plant does.

I will check it out...
I have slightly lost the the warm fuzzy feeling I had but I am undeterred and will go look at a few XC90's.
Good information here though.
I drove the earlier 163bhp version right before newer 185bhp model & the difference was quite noticable. I have slightly lost the the warm fuzzy feeling I had but I am undeterred and will go look at a few XC90's.
Good information here though.
It's a very nice place to be, the leather is great & as I mentioned, the hi-fi is very, very good.
3 months in & everytime I can prise the key out of my wife's hand, I still have a smile on my face when I drive it.

Be careful!
4wd system ceases to work due to worn splines on input shaft into box, basically makes car front wheel drive, no warning lights appear so the only way to check is to see if it will spin it's front wheels on loose surfaces. Cost to repair is anything from £250 to £1000 depending on where you take it and how badly seized up it is.
Does this apply to manual boxes?4wd system ceases to work due to worn splines on input shaft into box, basically makes car front wheel drive, no warning lights appear so the only way to check is to see if it will spin it's front wheels on loose surfaces.
