Took a few attempts to reverse, then got out, looked at it, tried again. After a few more attempts gave up and went inside.

I suspect that is the "empty designated space" the OP was referring to.

Judging by the angle of the Jag and front wheels, it had been driven in and abandoned.

Then again, not much room in front. Bet they would moan if they came back to find someone had clipped the rear.
