I think that is the shift in society that many may have missed, which is that the 30-55 working age bracket was historically skint as everything being earned was paying off the mortgage, the school fees, building the pension and just easing children. People generally had to wait until 60 to have cleared all those obligations and have the free money to indulge in a silly car, by which time a 2 seater was perfect. But that traditional scenario generally ended back at the turn of the century and higher salaries and greater opportunities delivered sufficient income to many 30-55s to be able to not just cover all the responsibilities but to have excess left over to bin on toys. Said toys being 2 seaters were pointless as you were still working all hours and when you could go out it was with 3 people and a dog in tow. So what in the early days was catered for by the tiny number of fast estates grew into supercar fast, if not faster SUVs. Cars capable of all the family duties but also capable of that supercar performance fix when the window of opportunity arose.

They're popular because they are bloody useful and fill a very clear niche. One that began with Chevy engines in Range Rovers, on to Quattro engines in estate cars and now whalloping V8s into SUVs, finally merging the advantages of both a 4x4 and an estate all with super car performance. They make perfect sense.
Don’t come in here talking absolute sense and reason. This is PH it’s for bashing any car over 500kg only.
I get them completely, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston etc are dream cars for some people with posters on their wall as a child but the reality is they can’t justify £200k+ sat in a garage 28 days a month so what’s the point, then these come along that the whole family can enjoy.
If you’re mega well healed and having multiple expensive cars to be used once in a blue moon is no issue then even better!

Look at the intellectual and psychological stressors that drive people to buy SUVs. SUVs are sold on the promise of safety and isolation from the outside world. It's for princess and the pea types. The horrible world must be kept at bay, I'm so sensitive, wrap me in three tonnes of space-stealing, polluting, child crushing metal and don't you dare criticise me for it because I'm special and I'm worth it.

I'm not sure 'just easing children' made much sense!!! biggrin

That's the other aspect, having multiple cars for different tasks and opportunities is easy if you happen to have plenty of garaging and general driveway space. When in the centre of town that tends to be quite difficult. I had space for two cars and something I learned about subsequently placing the less frequently used ones in storage or long term underground parking was that the faff of going to get them and return them resulted in just not bothering.

The simple reason why performance SUVs have become popular is that they're one car that does it all. Their biggest issue being their height which confuses and enrages very old or broken people who struggle to work basic footprints out. I don't know if these are the same blokes who are abnormally short in stature and have problems with taller men for no logical reason but height seems a very triggering metric for the poor souls.
