To steal from Chris Harris review of the new M2 recently "weight really is just a number and doesn't matter unless you can feel it negatively" (or something like that)- so lets wait for the test drives
I don't profess to be massively intelligent, but you can trust me...when I say that I can feel a difference in weight between my Caterham(550kg) and my F82 M4(1600kg) for sure.

PistonHeads...weight matters. biggrin

I am hoping for the same to be honest!

I can't afford a Lamborghini with fancy doors...so this will be the next best thing I reckon! hehe

I seem very confused at the moment. I can choose to spend 55k of my hard earned already taxed income on a Chinese roadster whilst the people collecting my tax are planning to boost defence spending to 2.5% of national income by 2030 because of, amongst others, China. I sort of wonder, will this extra 75bn be spent on deterrents made in China in order to deter the Chinese. amongst all this, I have no personal issues with China or the Chinese, but viewed from the sidelines, something does a seem an little amiss. Against this background does it really matter if it’s good, bad or ugly, possibly all three.

Top Gear first drive review by Tom Ford.

Looks brilliant (though red interior not for me!).

£55k for what looks to be a based on the review a decent mini GT or roadster.

I imagine it will be effortless to live with an almost slots in as a modern Audi TT where it’s a bit more but effortless to daily drive.

Fair play to MG and glad to see EVs evolving this way.

I don’t think this car needs to be the ultimate in handling in performance it just needs to be good. Look forward to U.K reviews.

For those not wanting to watch the TG video. Overall they were very positive with main “negative” being that it is more a GT than a sportscar.

I'd kind of agree AND disagree. I used to have a Mk2 MX5 and never thought about its sound (which was anaemic) where as my R8, I do. Perhaps it's expectations from the engine? I never once throught of my MX5 as an "engine" based / performance car - I didn't buy it for it's power (or lack of). I bought it for its price, size, and fun factor. I guess I'm saying it can swing both ways.
Agree with that, the engine in the mk2 MX-5 was a joyless thing.
I dunno, I quite like the engine in my Mk1 - stainless exhaust, K&N filter, lightened flywheel, snappy gearshift and the shorter final drive ratio from the imported cars means the engine's definitely a part of the fun.

Certainly a lot more engaging than this Alibababoxster.

Genuinely surprised anybody's interested in it. I'm guessing its just the vociferous group on here who treat being in favour of EVs like supporting a football team.

Don't worry everyone, the Chinese are coming to save us! rolleyes

I will watch that at some stage, but as you say...the weight of it puts it straight into the GT rather than sports car category for sure.

It's not really a Boxster competitor; it's far closer in size and ethos to, say, a Mercedes SL or Jaguar F-type:

F-type: 1818kg
Mercedes SL: 1,910kg

So it's still heavier, but not by a huge margin.
It's actually a bit longer than a 992! They should push it as a GT. I can't see people hopping out of an MX5 into a cyberster.
Has it ever been marketed as an MX-5 alternative? It's been obvious from day one that it was going to be bigger heavier and more expensive. As above it's a lot more like an EV F-Type than a lightweight roadster. Fair play to MG for being the first to get a car to market.
The electric Boxster needs to be good.

It's going to weigh a similar amount and is unlikely to be significantly faster so its going to need something special assuming it'll be that much more expensive.

Could be some embarrassing head to head articles if not.

They should’ve changed the MG logo. Made it contemporary for 2024. Sitting behind the wheel of this milk float and looking at that logo takes me back to 1970.
A bright yellow, 500 bhp, 2 seat, four wheel drive Milk Float ?

Because Milk Floats have electric motors ? At least be original, say "Oversized Mobility Scooter" or maybe "Racing Golf Buggy", milk float is so predictable and over used, and the one that services our road is diesel anyway, they have been for years, rarely see an electric milk float.

EV hater bingo in full flight.

I would like to see some more reviews and pictures but from what I have seen so far I like this. It isn’t a competitor to an MX5 or Boxster with that weight, but more akin to an SL. Definitely more GT than sports car, but nothing wrong with that.

The price seems quite decent these days though I would be interested to see what they will fetch on SalSac. It should make a perfect sensible daily driver.

I like the idea of wafting along country lanes with the roof down listening to sounds other than engine and exhaust. Should make for a novel experience.

The problem is the Chinese supply chain is so ubiquitous that virtually every car contains components that have been made using Chinese slave labour:

I know that I have a terrible habit of jumping on the dislike EV train, however I do find myself a bit fascinated by a 2 seater Roadster EV though for sure, even if it does weigh as much as the moon.

A few people have mentioned the Merc SL, weighs about the same. It's certainly an intriguing car, even if it's not the sort of car I'd buy.

I too love the silly noises my turbocharged mk1 mx5 makes, but I also love my EV for the commute - can you remind me which “brigade” I have to align myself with?

As for the Cyberster - daft name and daft tail lights, but no-one else is making an EV roadster (even a comfortable “GT” one) so they should be applauded.

For those saying they would buy it with an engine - I fear there is a reason the F-type and TT are ending production, because customers are not! The Z4 looks to be the closest petrol equivalent - I’m sure BMW would be happy to take your order.

Well, I care - amongst many other things, I've owned more than 10 Lotus, most of them weighed well under a tonne, and none of them weighed more than 1200kg...

Given that the US is one of 17 countries left that use forced labour (it would be interesting to compare numbers as the US system is massive), can we assume you will never buy a US car or anything else made in the US?

Watching that review, it kind of sums it up. It looks good actually to my eyes, but, the lack of steering feel, weight and general GT way it is leaning means IMO it'll be more suitable for the odd jaunt down the sea front, rather than being an interesting car to drive.
