So, an MX-5 isn't the answer then?

The RX-8 is my answer.

Screaming engine that needs to stay over 6,000 RPM, terrific 6-speed gearbox, great balance, great steering.

+1 for the TVR Cerbera. On looks I'll go for the later spider eyes version, not the earlier one with the Chimaera front and rear and Fiesta rear lights.

No chance. Big bloaty 4 door saloon with an engine that sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

No modern BMW could be the best in this thread, you'd have to go back to the 70s to make any BMW's eligible.

Greatest anything is emotive. Which 4 seat car did the most for motoring? Some old Saab or Volvo probably.

Not driven one then?
Engine sounds ok to me.
Not in the same league as your V10 at full chat, but then again, on cold start that engine reminds me of a diesel.
Let's call it even. smile

To sit in the rear of, surely a Maybach 62 has to be in with a shout. I'd have had the interior partition and fancy roof.

To sit in the driver's seat, the Koenigsegg Gemera would be an interesting if expensive choice.

Sticking with proper full size 4 seaters I would offer up the 500E.

Chapeau to the chap who is actually in possession of the car he deems the greatest 4 seater.

Whilst the rest of us are fantasising over rare metal worth more than our houses, there is something delightfully stoic about finding the most joy in the car you actually own.

Mercedes 350sel 6.3. Plus I've always felt the Jaguar XJ6/12 in Series 3 form is perhaps the most elegant, best looking four door saloon. Lexus LS400 must be in with a 'game changing' shout.

VW up! All the car you ever need. Perfectly formed and lovely to drive. 4 seats and 4 seatbelts.
I bought the Skoda variant for the wife/daughter to share. Whenever I drive it, I’m pleasantly surprised how good these are. As a tall person, I’m amazed at the space front and rear. They drive like a bigger car too. Lovely.

But none of these would be in my list of "greatest ever"

I'd put a load of old US muscle in here. Not sophisticated, but significant, fun, fast and often beautiful. "Greatest" is a broad church: but these 1960s machines were very significant in the history of cars. Sure, an equivalent 4 seater Ferrari would have been loads better at the time - but muscle cars were bought in their millions, and raced by ordinary people. They were modified, drag raced, street raced and circuit raced. They were blue collar motoring exotica, and remain an enduring cultural phenomenon.

Picking one is difficult, as loads of classics - but the original Mustang kicked off the whole thing, and something like a 1969 Boss 429, or one of the Shelby variants will be up there. It's probably going to be a Mustang, for this thread, just for historical significance.

Personally, I picked a 1969 427 Camaro. I had it out last weekend, and it was hilarious. 7 litres of choppy idle and V8 howl, 450bhp, 450lb feet of torque, with the chassis dynamics of a Roman chariot, and the steering feel of a tanker.

I loved every second and frankly, just like to stare at it.
