air enough, I still have all the 'Gedore' tools I bought as a teenager with which I rebuilt my MGA nearly 40 years ago, I think it's the layers of greasy fingerprints that keep them rust free getmecoat
Cool! I need an old project car to enjoy working on. Modern ///M cars and GTx cars are best left to the professionals for serious work.

This is my idea of heaven! Working in there must be bliss!
Yes, except my idea of work these days is sitting on the stool and spending a few minutes wiping down my wheels after a run. Then more sitting smile

But I have done real work from time to time. I've used all the tools in my cabinets at some stage:

i like the super tidy ones, but in all reality they must bring there own issues to keep them looking super clean. Don't get me wrong i don't like working in a mess, but my garage is probably like most enthusiasts, that being a multi use room which is a place to paint, saw, drill, weld, spray, store etc etc.
Yes, there's a difference between a show and a working garage, and I had to change my mindset in order to make the transition to a place of worship smile. But in reality a clutterfree space is 100x easier to keep clean than one that has tools all over the place. It literally takes me 30 seconds each day to blow away any dust and dead insects, and 5 minutes each week going over with a microfibre floor mop.

A white floor is no harder to keep clean than my previous mid-grey coating, with the added advantage that the whole garage is much brighter. It's amazing how much a dark floor sucks the light out of a room this size. The other benefit is that everything 'pops' against the white. It appears cleaner-looking and colours are more vibrant against the wall and floor, much like the effect inside a photographer's lightbox.

I love all the organised tool sets. But, what do you do with tools that don't fit into a set or are on their own? "Man drawer" for all the random bits and bobs?

It depends how far do you want to go. There are other options before falling back to "Man Drawer".

On the far end, there are companies who would laser cut foams inserts tailored to your existing tools. Expensive but ultimate solution. This is what a dealership or an industrial factory might do. There are also generic-precut foams for standard tools. You can also DIY cut them yourself (some how to videos on Youtube) but it won't look as professional.

Less of that, there are drawer dividers from companies like Lista for all sorts of needs.
e.g. http://www.listacabinets.com/lista-drawer-accessor...

And finally there are tool organizers like these. http://www.expeditionexchange.com/ortt/ernst004%20...

Mmmm, interesting solution. I'm not sure I would be comfortable "tainting" a perfect matching set with a different brand or odd/singular tool that way.

Anyway, looks great! thumbup

Nah, that fancy storage would never work for me. I even did a peg board thing once, but there was never anything on it, after the first week.

What you have to do is develop your memory, & remembering where you put that 14mm ring spanner is great for that.

Like the last time I was looking for mine. Couldn't find it anywhere, so sat down & had another swig of my hot coffee.

Ah, that was it. I'd had it in my hand when I went in to make that coffee. Yep, there it was, right beside the coffee maker, where I'd put it while getting the coffee grounds from the canister.

With some fancy storage set up, you'd never get that sort of mental exercise, now would you.

I don't think a white floor would look so good after i had been out with the plasma cutter and MIG fixing the landrover chassis.

When i see a huge rack of really expensive tools and a gleaming aston martin i get the distinct feeling that the only commonality between the two is they both get polished on the same day.

If someone is spending tens of thousands on tools and they don't have any lathes, milling machines, welders, folders or cutting torches i think it might just be for show.

No doudt someone will say i am just jealous but i have about ten grands work of tools in my workshop and a daily driver worth about the same as one of the welders.

Or maybe they just own vehicles that you can buy parts for with relative ease, rather than needing to make them yourself? wink

There's probably a middle ground. I would love to have a nice set of spanners, sockets, screwdrivers etc. all racked up in drawers but I've got loads of tools that in some way are special to me. Either they were my grandfathers, fathers or uncles or they are used for a particular job occasionally but when they are needed they're vital. I doubt these sort of items would be in the £1,000 SnapOn Tool set. scratchchin

We're all different. I've done my 'apprenticeship' so to speak with pulling cars apart, but as the cars changed and got more complex I no longer trusted myself to work on them. The tools I bought 10-30 years back were good for that time, but now I wanted a shrine instead, as I've explained. Maybe it was a mistake to call it a garage in the truest sense, rather a showroom.

OOI what have you done with the special little spanner for adjusting SU carbs and the feeler gauges and the angled screwdriver for reaching distributors inside the wing of a Twin Cam or the special socket that only fits TVR otter switch housings etc. etc. Have you ditched them all?

My garage....apologies I'd already posted them in the "Garage Flooring" thread but someone suggested they'd be better here!
