Never more than a rumour.

Saw a replay of the race this evening; when Vettel takes his pitstop for a new nose, there's an over head shot that shows a big red fire engine and two smaller vehicles that I'd assume were ambulances parked right at the end of the garages. Where were they when it all kicked off?

It'll certainly change the H&S rules for fire & suppression. I'm amazed it took 15 minutes for a fire engine to turn up and that the garages don't have C02 or Halon systems.
Erm halon has been banned for years!, while it puts fires out well, it does so by removing oxygen, from the fire and from the people using them!
rubbish!

Halon only needs ~4% saturation to be effective (usually it's targeted at ~6% to cover less than 100% sealing), it's non toxic and perfectly survivable for people to be in the same place, that's why it was introduced to remove CO2 which needed 90+% saturation.

(in the past used to deal in Halon systems for data centres etc. it's still by far the best solution and used extensively where allowed)
its banned because it destroys the ozone layer
We install Hydramist (High Pressure Watermist) into loads of engine test cells, the pits need this tech in there- the fire would have been dealt with very very quickly without water damage.

We even do a demo test for our clients running a computer on 240v ac in a Hydramist filled room - watermist doesn't affect the computer and still puts the fire out....

ps any gaseous suppression system would have difficulties with the open end of the garage as you'd never achieve the concentration level with the door not closed.
good idea, they need something...

as for Halon, it's easy enough to reach 4% even with doors open, you only have to get to 4% for a matter of seconds, yes, with CO2 that would be impossible (and would kill people).
A CO2 system would be the only (legal in Europe) gaseous system that will work and is used in un-sealed rooms,(sized as a local aplication system) but as pointed out its nasty stuff and would have to be mechanicaly isolated whilst the area is occupied, so not much use.
Really watermist (not sprinklers) as mentioned above is the sensible option.

Old news now but I loved Whitmarsh's banter with EJ on the forum, offering him a job as front jackman but couldn't promise not overshooting hehe

Smoke damage beyond repair I imagine. If it is like road cars then smoke damage to that magnitude is an insurance write off.

Race cars are not like road cars. The chassis actually is only the tub. Tubs can be repaired, and every other bit is replaceable.

However what we don't know is how the heat has effected it. In all likely-hood I doubt that car will race again.

Good to see Maldonado hasn't let the win go to his head....http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/18053650

BBC said:
Williams driver Pastor Maldonado believes he may be able to mount a title challenge after scoring his maiden win in the Spanish Grand Prix.
It's not Maldonado getting excited it's the BBC headline writer. If you actually read the article Maldonado is asked if he reckons he can win the title to which he replies 'anything is possible'.
Exactly. And, on the basis of this season so far, I'd agree with him!

That's nothing!

I've just sold my house and put all the money on Narain Karthikeyan to win the championship.

A daft 50p part failure away from the biggest shock victory and one of the greatest F1 drives ever. And ITV were on a chuffing break when Hill overtook Schumacher!!
