Sometimes, sometimes not.

I personally think you only ever get high teens in these things over a long period of time if you drive REALLY sensibly and very sympathetic to achieving a high MPG, like coasting up to traffic lights, never giving it WOT or going beyond 2500rpm, using cruise control and absolutely no pulses of pressure on the throttle on the Mway etc. People's driving varies massively in my experience and when folk recount great MPG figures then never really convey to you just how well they drive with regard to fuel economy.

I've never driven like that and would find it way too painful to do so, pointless as well and completely antithetical to my philosophy on life. I completely dote on the sensations of motion, weight, acceleration and decelleration etc. so I am a constant fiddler whether that be with the throttle, sterring or brakes; I can't bear a steady state with no change in anything. I also do give it plenty of beans from time to time and use the thing to its limits, cornering/braking/acceleration. That said, DavidRSR's experience seems to match mine exactly as does other folk I have spoken to so I'm not that abnormal. I did do a whole tank once on the Mway and taking it at a very steady 70mph just as an experiment but I think i only got 420 miles or so so im not convinced i could improve much upon 16.5ish even if I tried.

I have to jump in here.

When people in the past have been asking about Cayenne's, you always get the responce " get the V8 in the real world the MPG is same as V6"

I never bought into that. and as jackle has proven above the V8 is a thirsty car. I have just returned from France in my V6, 1000 motorway miles there at a steady 80ish with a few long 3 figure blasts in France, 1000 miles in mixed roods while there & same trip back. got 24.9 MPG and achiving the greatest MPG was not top of my agenda.

Just to add some balance to this mpg discussion

I tend to get high 18s to low 19s mpg.

This is with a 2004 turbo, mixed driving, but no real town work.

Get a turbo - it uses less SUL than the NA version smile

They are quick when you need them to be and docile when you dont.

I have to say it is a phenomenal vehicle and you wont regret buying one.

The worst I have got to a tank is about 17mpg or 325 miles between fills and I have seen 420 miles which equates to about 21mpg.

Expect to keep mine for 5 years and dont know what I would replace it with except another.

again i am biased, but, go and drive a Turbo....and you will want one. MPG not that important to me either as dont use it everyday, but honestly there is not really any difference between NA and Turbo except of course in the performance! You also get all the 'extra' spec as standard.Just a completely capable car in all respects (if only it looked better!)

I'm sure the turbo is close to the V8 overall but if you search the archives here there are warnings if you do mostly town driving and reports that the pure turbo urban cycle is knee trembling stuff. As sparky says, he does no town driving and this is what kills things. I once did a whole tank on purely village stuff and school runs in my V8 and I got less than 250 miles out of it ! Saying that, if I was buying again I would get a turbo. Apart from anything else they are cheaper !

The other thing I have found is that on a steady 60-70mph motorway run, yes, your economy gets a lot better. If both your destination and starting point are literally on the side of the motorway then all fine and dandy but thrown in 15 mins normal driving at either end and the figures soon turn crap again. smile

Bloody hell, I never knew these were that cheap. I would not normally go for this type of car but, at they prices it might be worth a punt. What are they like to drive?

I love KN's always have, ended up buying a Touareg Derv for her indoors though.
Had it a year and got rid of it today, to be honest once the novelty is over of owning and driving a 2.5 ton, difficulty in parking in standard spaces and constantly filling the fecking thing up it had to go.
On a run 27mpg and normal driving which it spent most of its time 23mpg and it was a diesel so a KN petrol must be scary, they like tyres too.

my 2p
did over 60K in 2 years in my 04 plate turbo

19.5mpg.
very mixed driving, though a lot on the M'way !

superb car;
only thing that went wrong was the drivers window mech broke - fixed it myself with the workshop manual and a £60 new mech.

Coolant pipe fracture is the biggest worry on the V8's - dont know actual figures of % failure, but expensive when it goes - 2K to fix & potential engine damage
I had mine changed as a precautionary measure at a heavily discounted rate as the car was already in for a service.
stupidly fast car that is very, very capable.
Best tyres I found for grip vs life vs cost were Yoko's
Pirelli worst
Oh, and they do eat oil - it's normal.
not cheap as its mobil 1 though !

Love the idea of a Turbo even more!! Wouldnt it be ruinous and just plain mad to buy a 04/05 Turbo with no warranty??

Would scare the crap out of me!!

Dont be scared....after a while you take a certain pleasure in when the next warning light will come on ! Joking, virtually every 'performance' car has its issues, cams on RS4's,vanos on BM's,anything Italian is fragile etc etc etc...at the end of the day it was a cica £80k car that you can buy for peanuts now,and it is still very much a Porsche.Possibly the best all round car i have owned and thats a few!

Cheapest I have seen is £15-£16k which is pretty good for a £80k car. I guess I could swallow a few largish bills!!

I bought an 05 Turbo, Left Hand Drive Import ex California, and Ex Italy, incomplete Service History, 45K miles. was I mad, probably, have I had any scary bills........nope. I get it fixed locally at my Porsche dealer here in Portugal. Oil is scary expensive but you can take your own !!!!!
Spark plugs and coilpacks likewise !!!!!!

Labour rate is €51 + I.V.A (23%) per hour.

Many people come over on Holiday and get their car serviced here............hmmm wonder why!!!!

So I say.............GO FOR IT. They are great cars with great spec and performance and so what about the economy. What you spend on fuel you would save in purchase price.

I had the misfortune of having to drive a V6 in New Zealand 6 years ago. My view...if you live in Holland i am sure it would be fine..but in a country with any inclines at all it couldnt pull the skin off custard and as a result was thrashed to within an inch of its sad miserable life in order the achieve forward progress. But then it is a veedub engine...

Do yourself a favour and buy a V8... Especially if you really are only covering 5k miles a year. Thats what i will buy when pension off the Cherokee next year.

I bought a 2005 turbo as a winter car last year just to tick it off the want one list. The poor 996 has been sat virtually unused since. The turbo is a stunning machine! No it doesn't do twisties like the C2 but not far off and amazes everyone who rides in it due to comfort setting on the air sus. DON'T buy a non air sus car as I tried 2 and they rode very poorly. I have Bose, heated seats & steering wheel, full aero kit, sports exhaust and 20 inch technos from factory, tech art air sus module and massive spec. Somebody spent £100k plus on her new 6 years earlier and I bought from a forecourt, with warranty for 12k. Bassalt with grey too. No savannah!
Initially meant to sell last spring. Still got her, will still have her this time next year.

One of the absolute vehicle bargains at the mo.
Do it!
