all you in small one litre cars paying no road tax and hardly any fuel duty, shame on you.
We all pay through the nose for fuel tax, even one litre misers. At 80p/litre taxation, the goverment relishes every trip you make to the fuel station...cry
Very true.
Revenue is down because where not travelling as much and not using as much fuel.
The government needs revenue, so we either need to use more or the fuel price will have to increase.
I'm depressed now.

I will not be using Confused.com or Specsavers again. I recommend you follow suit.
Will do so, I only posted the confused link as they have the data for fuel costs and duty charges.

No need to.... the sign is a universal one.... so changing the national speed limit to whatever doesnt cost anything.....

Exactly - its all covert indirect taxation - and to bang an old drum - the money never gets spent on the road quality/infrastructure that would be required for an increase in limit (try coming through that S curve on the M20 at 80mph on the way back from the Channel - in France it would be signed as 60mph with Subsidence signs :-)

80mph as a limit increase is a good idea to allow 80mph running when conditions allow and not be penalised, but for the most part the UK traffic volume, and driver awareness, isnt up to it ie fast moving cars arriving at speed behind the plodders in the middle or outside lanes.

Also, the energy taken to push the car through the air increases as speed rises so increasing consumption. I love the odd 'clearout' but have noted that a long run (1000kms) at 75mph v 80mph on the autobahn/route will reduce the consumption by around 10-15% - boring but true.

And I shall definitely NOT be insuring my car with any of these tts of insurers either!

I also note that there is vested interest here with others "sponsors" of BRAKE - Siemens, Network Rail, etc.

Do we have any legal beavers on PH who could 'have a look' at the charity status of BRAKE. Semms very dubious to me. What charitable function(s) do they do?

Seems most of the extra cost is "£766.6m in fuel costs." but that's down to the drivers, as there's nothing stopping people carrying on at 70mph if they want to save fuel. The drivers who will do 80mph are, dare I say, probably already driving at 80mph with the existing limit in place.
From my experience in German Autobahns is that most people still drive around 120 to 130kph (75 to 80 mph), Brake forgot that driving fast cost money, a lot, and most drivers will keep on driving below the speed limit to avoid the extra cost, and based on my experience with Germans drivers that means the vast majority of the drivers.

Nail and head!

However, Global warming is no more, when did you last see a headline with Global warming in its headlines, it has now cleverly or conveniently changed to "Climate Change" as there is direct evidence now that the planet is actually cooling down!

However, Climate Change is probably one of our biggest "industries" now, great for green taxes, scientists having nice big grants etc etc Dont expect that to change any time soon i am afraid frown

The RAC is listed as a sponsor. How can an organisation for the motorist sponsor an anti car organisation??!!

On Brake's charity status. A charity provides support for those affected by problems, in need of help, etc like Macmillan Nurses for cancer sufferers. What support does Brake provide? If it does not provide support then it is just a club not a charity and should have its charity status withdrawn.

Has no one at BRAKE been on a motorway for a while!! If you are doing 80mph there are plenty cars passing you so 80mph is normal nowadays!

rofl at Brake.

I've just been on their website for some light reading and this is the kind of thing we're having to deal with here:
Brake said:
Overtaking
Overtaking on a rural road is incredibly dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Overtaking will always involve driving on the wrong side of the road, which can be enough time for a vehicle to appear travelling in the other direction.

Most trucks are limited to about 60mph so it takes an age to overtake them; especially for those who insist on not exceeding the speed limit, but determined to put themselves in a place of great danger for as long as possible!
At least these decent and law abiding people will then be able to pass the truck a tad more quickly; and get themselves and a few others out of danger more quickly.
Surely that should please the 'coffin' drivers?

Coffin? Yep, that's what I call them because they deliberately drive into a situation with little way out - all it takes is someone to put the lid on and bingo! Not even any need for clips or nails!
