They should never have got rid of the number boards in the first place.
I'd also do away with all this lucky number rubbish and they get allocated the number based on previous years final positions in the class and rookies can have numbers issued from after the last rider that was there the previous season.

I kind of agree that the Champion should be compelled to run the number 1, but I actually like how riders create a 'brand' with their number. The likes of KS34, CS27, JL99, MM93 and some combinations even go way beyond the sport... VR46 I'd also do away with all this lucky number rubbish and they get allocated the number based on previous years final positions in the class and rookies can have numbers issued from after the last rider that was there the previous season.
