Guys,

I've just had the old metalastic bushes pressed out the the diff brackets and thought I'd have a play with the new polybushes before I send the brackets off for powder coating.
Only the Polybushes looked a tad big so I've measured them.

Does this look right for a GKN Diff - do polybush really squish this much?

Metalastic diameter 41.3mm
Polybush diameter 43.2

Polybush part no 26A
Diff Mounting Bush
TVR
2 Poly pieces
1 steel tube
Orange.

I've been on Polybush.co.uk and that's absolutely no help at all.

Could it be for the later BTR diffs?

Mine were blue not orange. How are they for length as the early pre cat bushes are shorter in length.

When I fitted Polybushes to the suspension they were all a perfect fit, none oversize at all.

Didn't think to check for length.

Thanks for the pointer Carsy and if I'd had the brains to check the length in the first place I wouldn't have needed to post this thread.
These are ruddy huge compared to the originals.

Effing so called 'specialists' fail again. It took 3 attempts to get a wing mirror glass and they still failed and I have a prop UJ and a six bolt manifold gasket pair in my bits box because it wasn't worth the trouble of returning them.
Clever? Fecking idiots more like.

If it helps. I made this mistake and got the bigger later polybushes. At the time spoke with steve heath and he wasnt aware that the earlier cars were different and so couldnt offer any further help. I ended up cutting the bushes in half and removing about a cm from each half so that they were the right length. Using the vice pressed both halves into the bracket. The fact that they were slightly too wide in diameter as well meant that they were a good tight fit. Done a few thousand miles on them now and they havent budged.

I later found out that you can get the correct size ones. But cant remember now who does them. Maybe pm Ant as i think it was him who said where you can get them from.

Ian , the only place I know of that sells correctly sized poly for precats is David Geralds. Only the rear is the same size as the later BTR diffs....

You also need to work out how to encapsulate the bushes, if left floating they will just pop out in use. Later cars have thrust to keep the bushes in place ~ early cars don't and relied on the glue in the metalastic assemly to keep them in place, with only the central tube encapsulated by the chassis assembly.

DG do the originals, not poly bushes.....
i made new brackets when i fitted the btr into a precat, had to make the side bush mounts to accept polybushes, and i added a thrust washer to prevent movement.

if you want poly bushes, it might be easier to machine some to size to fit the original mounts.

Resurrecting this thread because 18months and probably only a few thousand miles after replacing the bushes I have a clunk which is getting quickly worse.
I fitted metalastic bushes in the side brackets and altered the BTR polybush I had to fit into the rear chassis mount.

Do you think it's possible that by altering the orange polybush I somehow buggered it and it's this which is letting go and causing the clunk?

More then likely the 4 bolt rear bracket to diff has become loose.

These should be thread locked and torqued to 26ft lb iirc.

If it has become loose it's a bugger to get to. I removed my tank, cut aligned holes in the rear fibreglass panels and went in through there!

If you do this, change the diff oil at the same time smile

It's no more than a 2-3 hour job tops.
