Right was playing about with car yesterday afternoon and started fixing my accumulation of goodies from the griff growl... on of which was the Leven Bonnet Stay....to fix this I took the old rollers off, which turned out to be squared off so need to order new ones.... but what else is in the assembly ?

Bolt with metal sheath, with the following slid on.... roller, washer, rubber gromit/disc against body work...... is there something that should go between the bolt and the roller, looked like the remains of some rubber but can't be sure or it could be 22 years worth of dirt ?

and also want to change the blue silicone on the bonnet stay to red... any ideas ?

Steve, this is another one that I am sure there will be plenty of interest.

I've put the Leven bonnet stay on. As I did it I thought there would be great potential to replace the little bent steel catch under the bonnet with a nice one in stainless steel/aluminium. I am sure there would be take up on that and PeteGriff with his knowledge and access to amnufacturing machinery might have some good ideas.

As far as the rollers are concerned, again I reckon there is potential to re-manufacturer but with a couple of smaller roller bearings, through which the bolt goes. Mine have a rusty mild steel bush at the moment, which I liberally smeared with copperslip. At the very least perhaps a small run of stainless steel bushes and some stainless bolts would improve the operation/looks. I reckon there are a few people in the Griff/Chimp community who would be interested (me included).

I've noticed on a few Griffs that the rollers have actually worn through the fibreglass. On mine, the previous owner has used a strip of adhesive backed velcro on which the rollers run. Crude but effective so far. Again I wonder if there is potential for a nylon strip on which the roller could run - anyone got any thoughts?

Sorry guys, I'm sitting at my desk in Kazakhstan, it's 8:00am (04:00am UK time) letting my mind wander onto the important things in life - TVRs, rather than doing some work. Pete

A cheap interim solution is some electrical heat shrink over the top, can look effective if done properly

Hi Pete, just picked up on this!

You have piqued my interest as I like problem solving (you might have guessed this). Firstly the little stay bracket rivetted onto the N/S wing; this is one of the items I have not tackled yet, even though I always look at it when opening the bonnet thinking 'must replace that'. They would be such an easy item to make in stainless. Now, if I could obtain one that I could use to measure up and get drawn onto CAD they could be very economically laser cut in a large batch and formed up! So, if anybody has one kicking around not fitted to a Griff can I borrow it? (I know I have one on my car but do not want to take it off just yet). If there ar no spares out there I will take mine off over the Winter layup.

As far as the rollers are concerned, I replaced the old naff one bonnet stay with one of the last Steve Heath jobs a couple of years ago (Leven as you say are reproducing these now), at the same time bought two new rollers and reassembled with Stainless fixings and washers, I just greased the inner sleeve with copaslip! They roll nicely are not sloppy at all. With respect to the channels in the inner wing that the rollers 'roll against'; I did have a play last year with some very thin stainless strips (0.7mm) but they reduced the gap too much so the rollers bound up. So I have thought about some PTFE strip but it would have to be quite thin and again would wear through eventually. I will give it some more thought over the coming months!

All the best, Pete

I do, I just need to drill the pop rivets out when I get home, obviously I will have a couple off you for whatever it costs. I already have your number. Looks like I need to take a drive round to Essex.

I replaced mine with the Leven jobbies. I was going to have some made up but I didn't have your manufacturing know how and the Leven ones are good and they are great to deal with

Same but didn't replace the rollers, perhaps I should have. I was thinking about machining in roller bearings but perhaps that is a bit over the top...

Like I said, the guy before used adhesive backed velcro. It won't last forever but it is doing OK. I was thinking of using a thin adhesive backed rubber strip, there is a specialist rubber shop near me (no jokes please boys....). I like the idea of PTFE because of its slippery qualities...

Like you say; something to think about over the winter. Must think about those brake and clutch master cylinder covers as well...., cheers Pete

This is moving off topic (sorry guys), but I will start a thread on all the parts (stainless and otherwise) I have developed for my Griff over the years. One part (stainless exhaust mounting tray) I had a batch run off for our local Mid Essex TVRCC, for the Griff & Chim boys! I am also (I know its been some months) still thinking about the brake master cylinder and servo adaptor kit for converting to Ford KA units which are still readily available. That's enough for now……. Pete

SC Power developed new rollers to perfectly fit the track manufactued from polyeurethane, slightly softer to prevent damage to body work when opening and to eliminate wear in the groove. they are supplied with stainless steel inserts are are a very good price.
