The steering on my 97 Griff has gone stiff. It's worse when the engine has warmed up. My local garage has checked the UJs and there's nothing obviously wrong with the PAS rack. TVRSW had a look 6 months ago & said it all seemed ok. It's gradually getting worse, I can put 10-20 degrees on the wheel and take my hands off, it'll stay with no return.
Any ideas what to check next?

Proviso the rack, pump and so on have been checked; uprights ?

I have not taken apart a front upright of the Griff, but do know on M' it can be a problem

If the pivots wear out over time, there can be issues in self centering

Easy check, jack up the front of the car (both sides) and manually turn the wheels to feel the resistance....

It still points to the column UJs.

Remove, check and lub them.

Mark them before stripping down so you don't have to realign the steering wheel.

+1

Usually the u/js.

I don't think the PAS has much caster return at the best of times.

Top joint in wheel arch - measure length before you strip it as the 115mm version is not available and, in my experience, not replaceable with the available 100mm one unless the intermediate shaft is changed for a correspondingly longer one. I did post up the part numbers about 6 months ago when discovering this but ended up rebuilding a 115mm joint with new spiders and bearings from a 100mm as a stop-gap. It's still on the car! ahem smile
