I'm taking the griff on a bit or a road trip through Europe over new year and i was wondering if there are any essential spares or bits of kit i should take like fuses, bulbs etc.

Also i have tried to find the correct size 40A fuse for the griffith but with no luck - can anyone recommend a place?

On a recent 3000 mile jaunt around Europe I took:

Serpentine belt
Throttle cable
Otter switch
Expansion tank pressure cap
Fuel pump relay
Other assorted relays
Spare bulbs
Loads of spare fuses
Various tape - including hose repair kit
Lots of zip ties
Jump start kit
2 cans of Tireweld
Oil & water
10 litres of super unleaded in a metal can
Heatproof gloves

Toolkit consisted of sockets, spanners, drivers, pliers, WD40, jack, wheel nut wrench, battery powered compressor, etc. Basically anything needed to fit the spares above.

Having said this, I used nothing more than a headlight bulb, which blew as I reversed out of my garage on the first day!

Hope this helps,
Pete

Dealers or Demon tweeks are the only places I know that have 40 AMP fuses. If you get some, keep them in the car not at home. A certain Griff owner (not me) knows what I am talking about....

Steve
PS there is a touring section in the new edition.

Don't forget Insurance and Breakdown recovery.

No - I'm not being funny, chaps!!!! Peace of mind!

Dave Batty also normally keeps 40A in stock - just don't bother with your local Halfwits, they told me that 40A fuses don't exist, naturally!!!

Are you going anywhere with snow? If so, I have some very nice (unused) chains - bought after doing a 360 in Germany.

The way I see it is, if you have to use the spacesaver (which is apparently pretty yuck) where are you going to put the wheel you've just removed?

Tyre Weld for me!!

off to Switzerland, but i will be leaving the car in Zurich to avoid the ice. i have driven on the space saver and it felt like i was driving on glass - i think i'll go for the tyre weld.

How much for the chains?

by the way Mel do you have a contact for Farnell? I can't seem to find one on the web. RS are a bit difficult as i have to set up an account first & have too short an attention span for that!

Given that list, it might be easier to put the bits togther and make another Griff...

(A shoplifter walks out of Halfords with so many spare parts under his coat that one assistant says to another: 'If we give him a push he might start!'

I always thought this was the mother of all spares kits! I reckon it's more than I've got in my garage! Rich... p.s. with due acknoledgment to www.pikeynet.com

Tool Kit
As so many people kept asking what I take round with me, I thought I'd make a page to point people at!

Just before I bought the car I popped to Halfords and stocked up on a few things for a "just in case" scenario. The tools are really just for quick fixes and minor problems. I don't think there's any need to take more than this. Though the car's proved itself to be totally reliable, I like to be prepared!

2 tins of tyre weld, Jump leads, Socket set, Foot pump, 5 litres of oil, 5 litres of water
Disposable camera, Gaffer tape, Electrical tape, Torch, First aid kit, Fire Extinguisher, Fuses
Oil pressure relief spring, Set of 3 pliers, Cable ties, Ratchet spanner set, 24 mm spanner (for the pressure relief spring!), 8mm spanner, Adjustable spanner, Allen key set (which works on an angle), Cross head screwdriver, Flat screwdriver, Small handle cross head screwdriver
Small handle flat screwdriver, Long, thin screwdriver... that doesn't live in the boot...
Rags, Map of France, High visibility vest, Tow rope, 'On Tow' sign, Warning triangle
(For some reason, I don't have a hammer in here - I don't trust myself!!!)
And in case you think it's a big deal, it's not - this is how it looks in the boot:

What’s the problem with oil pressure relief spring, are they prone to failure ?

Cheers,

Simon.
