Went through a phase during the winter of considering selling it for something more track focus'd but instead I have bought myself another toy for track use and its gonna be fun! Nothing special, only £2K, but thats half of what makes it fun!

So Im hanging on to the griff now. Love what it does and planning another long Euro holiday again. Going to try and get further south into Italy this year or possible take in some of Eastern Europe. Also considered Croatia. Better plan a route soon!

I have done 2 airfields, 2 trackdays and 2 European drives as part of my 14,000 miles all on the same tyres (S03s). They still have a fair bit of tread on them too but have just had to change the rears as I had a screw in them and didnt want to be relying on a fixed tyre whilst a long way from home. Kept the old ones so I an get it repaired an use them again.
The tyres have lasted a suprisingly long time.

Now have a full set of S03s on the car, a set of rears in the garage alongs side a full set of S02's. Thats on top of a tyre for the Golf and 2 space savers. I might open my own tyre bay!

Thanks for asking about the car though.
Only faults have been an alternator that packed up in Bourdeaux and cost and arm and a leg (tourist tax) and a holy exhaust manifold. Its been in the garage (APM at Liphook) a few times but only for checkups before I go away and services.

Just need some good weather now so I can get some miles on it again! (Done less than 1000 miles so far this year).

Also bought a battery conditioner since I was using it so much in the winter. I recommend them, it starts so much easier and you dont have to wince when you turn the key!

No one mentioned difference between So2s and SO3s

OK, here goes...

I also have heavy wear in middle (approx half of area)but not at edges (2 x quarter area).

This is normal and suggests that your tyre pressures are OK.

Are SO3s stiffer in the side wall than SO2s?

No they are about the same. It's a third tyre, the SO2PP that has softer sidewalls.

For reference, the backs have lasted 3 years and 16k miles.

That's very good.

Hmmmm... differing opinions (or as the song says, "2 men think they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong" - answers on a post card please for song title!).

Again, thanks for replies, scratching head now as wear characteristics seem to indicate a convex rolling surface ie over-inflation.

Will experiment with new tyres when fitted.

Glad to hear DustyC still smiling with griff, intrigued as to £2k track car's identity though.

When driving in Italy in the summer I ended up going as low as 17PSI in the end. Took it easy till the tyres were warmed up but found this to be the best starting pressure.

When I got my Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres fitted on my Grif I was advised to set them to a lower pressure on trackdays, as the heat put into them from hard driving will heat them, and the air inside, up, causing the air to expand and increase pressure. Sure enough, fiddling around with pressures at the track produced positive results on apparent traction and handling. Checking pressures immediately after coming into the pits showed increased values.

BTW, these tyres are brilliant, IMHO, though not advised for any conditions other than dry, and so therefore probably only appropriate for fair weather toys
