Griffith split roof chop....
Discussion
Hi everyone, ive now had my griff for almost a whole year....and survived Scotlands flooded roads last summer....
My problem is that i dont really find it handy to take the roof on and off....and unload and then stow the enormous thing in the boot....and oop north here you dont really want to leave home without it.....
My question is does anyone have any information on chopping the roof in half for easier stowage that they would be willing to share. ie which seal to use, and any extra locating pins etc ? Im quite handy and happy to tackle the job myself before the summer begins.
There dosent really appear to be anything happening on the comercial split roof scene still......or does anyone know off any actually available ?
Does anyone have any opinions regarding whether this mod would reduce the value of the car ?
cheers

Try looking at these threads.
Split Roof threads
The PR Woods one has died I think, mine is taking a lot longer than expected but Surface and Design in Blackpool have recently cut one in half and done a nice job.
THere are one or two others on here who've done the job quite successfully themselves and will be along soon I'm sure to advise

I'd say cutting your original roof would put people off if you sold it.
They aren't massively expensive to buy so try to get yourself another. They turn up on Fleabay reasonably regularly.
I bought a spare last year and cut it. Life is much much easier with a split roof for sure. The split version will sit on top of a full boot.
There are a number of different ways to do it. Mine is a simple cut in half with a thin foam seal in the middle. I have rubberised overcentre catches in the drawer that I bought for the job but decided not to bother because it works just fine without anything pulling the halves together. But then I have the Leven hood cover that I carry everywhere so it isn't tested to any extreme.
The cut is fairly straightforward, but you then need to fill in the voids front and back and glass the cut edge or water will get into the laminate and split it.
I have a small aluminium locating pin at the back. Mainly because I didn't like that the two panels didn't sit perfectly flat together. Its not strictly necessary though.
I removed the fabric off mine, because it wasn't a colour match, and had it painted.
In hindsight I'd look at getting it covered again because the painted version is vulnerable to scratches.
Think thats about it. Cue Seasider and Ballistic Banana...

I had mine done by surface and design, and then trimmed by DC trim as part of a big refit. The design on mine used 2 locating pins to make sure and was trimmed in cream leather inside. S & d also formed a lip in the roof to help water resistance, I also live in Scotland, so needed the best waterproofing I could get!
With complete new seals it is better than before, quieter as well, although it's still very new and a little stiff until the seals bed in properly. Well worth it though!

Yours was the one i saw there, was that your red/maroon griff being re-trimmed at the same time, just had a full respray......looked well if it was,With complete new seals it is better than before, quieter as well, although it's still very new and a little stiff until the seals bed in properly. Don't forget me Ian Since chopping mine up ( before everybody body else jumped on the bandwagon ) I have had no problems with my H section ali joining strip, available from any ali supplier
Over centre catches are a good idea but now I feel that they may be not really required. The curvature of the roof tends to hold thing in place just fine
My advice .... Just do it
Moose
How the hell did I forget the Godfather of roof cutters !
I didn't realise yours had H section ali joining the two parts Moose. How does it finish at the back end? I know this historically is the place where it drips and with Ballistic Bananas roof we went to great lengths to create a 'tail' to fit into the slot in the lift up section to stop drips.

I was almost put off the idea of cutting it...but now im definately doing it.....it is a useful improvement to the car..............isnt it......
Moosehunter.....how did you get your ali extrusion to bend to the curvature of the roof ?
i dont suppose there is a step by step piccy collection anywhere ?
cheers
